1843 Breen 5430. Thin-serif 1, Recut 4. Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$1,100.00 |
Exceptional prooflike glitter distinguishes this meticulously struck example. Some tawny gold hugs the outer dentils and rim, diagnostic die file lines can be found in the ''white'' stripes of the reverse shield. All Mint State grades of this date are elusive to downright rare, as the 1843 mintage actually circulated quite extensively. A tic or two keep this pleasing coin from a higher... more |

1845 Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$5,500.00 |
 - on the very edge of Choice. The most delightful glossy ebony toning shows a subtle undercurrent of gold. The closely-spaced date shows the fiercely pointed '5' typical of this series' logotype. Both sides show a remarkably full strike, and a glass finds a few light marks that keep the coin from fully Choice. One of only 24,500 struck. NGC MS62. |

1846 Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$805.00 |
The boldest prooflike glitter of the smooth fields combines with a wealth of detail to give this light rose-toned example its extraordinary charm. The date shows minimal recutting on the '1' and the 'white' stripes within the reverse shield display die-filing lines as made in the Mint during die preparation. |

1846 Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$1,100.00 |
A second pleasing example without recutting in the date. Boldly struck with the usual filled area beneath Liberty's chin and light die file marks in the reverse shield stripes. Light blue appears at the rims with a hint of clear rose in the centers. A minor bagmark or two is noted for accuracy, but the overall visual impression is one of the highest quality. |

1850 Breen 5442. Closed '5'. Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$4,500.00 |
 - or finer. A narrow outer band of iridescent silver and blue surrounds this coin's pleasing rose centers, the reverse being especially richly toned. Breen described this Closed '5' variety as unarguably rare, and speculated that most of the 7,500 business strikes produced were melted rather than released to circulation. NGC MS61. |

1452 |
1850'O' Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$5,250.00 |
Deeply impressed devices are framed within precise, high rims. Glowing red-gold toning accents the reliefs on both sides of this elusive New Orleans strike. The '5' in the date is tightly closed as often observed on pre-Civil War silver coinage and the 'O' is equidistant from feather and stem. Closest study finds a few bagmarks of minimal visual significance. |

1851 Breen 5445. High Date, original. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated
|
CH BU |
$50,000.00 |
The digits in the date virtually touch the rocky base above them, identifying an original striking. The original business strike mintage is one of the rarest of the Liberty Seated Dollar series, with only 1,300 pieces struck. This example is the same die state as the piece in the American Numismatic Society cabinet, showing a short die crack under 'ON', another linking tops of UNITED.... more |

1853 Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$1,500.00 |
A meticulous strike is enhanced by sea-green and tawny gold toning. Partial wire rims further testify to the boldness of this coin's strike. The space under Liberty's chin shows the colorfully named ''chin whiskers'' identified with several dates of the Liberty Seated Dollar series. One of 46,110 business strikes produced of this important date. |

1854 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated
|
CH BU |
$8,000.00 |
 - or even finer. Wonderfully smooth fields and diamond-sharp reliefs are laved in glowing clear gold over flashing silver-white for the greatest beauty. One of 33,140 business strikes, but a date notoriously rare in the highest Mint State grades. The date is very delicately punched into the die and the tops of each digit are a trifle less sharp than the bottoms. |

1855 Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$4,500.00 |
Satiny fields offer a glint of semi-reflectivity in the peripheral devices on either side. The strike is balanced and well above the norm in every respect. There is, however, some evidence of very light graffiti in the upper reverse field that is largely concealed by emerald-gold and vibrant blue peripheral iridescence. The centers exhibit a somewhat paler shade of mauve-gray. This rare date... more |

1859'O' Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$1,000.00 |
 - with claims to Choice. Date shows thin numerals with the '9' noticeably lower than '185'. Prooflike silver gleam contrasts with peripheral red-gold on the obverse, blue and gold decorates the reverse rim. 'O' is carefully placed below the arrow tip and stem. A scattering of contact marks recalls bag storage or shipment. |

1860 Brilliant Proof
|
BR PF |
$1,300.00 |
This obverse is divided between somewhat matte deep gray and rose and an oval area of glass-smooth ebony. The wholly reflective reverse displays light blue-gray with a silvery central field for boldest appeal. Breen's researches revealed that only 527 Proofs left the Mint from a higher initial mintage that was largely returned for melting. |

1862 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated
|
CH BU |
$4,700.00 |
Russet, gold and iridescent blue toning gives this coin decent eye appeal. The strike is strong and the surfaces are decent for the grade. A pleasing example of an issue of just 11,000 business strikes. NGC MS63. |
|

1863 Very Choice Brilliant Proof
|
VERY CH BR PF |
$4,000.00 |
 - virtually of Gem quality. This obverse displays breath-taking bulls-eye rose-gold and electric blue toning with bright aqua at the center. Reverse displays steel and blue with a wisp of rose for overwhelming beauty. One of 460 Proofs struck, and certainly one of the finer pieces still extant. |
|
1461 |
1864 Very Choice Brilliant Proof
|
VERY CH BR PF |
$3,800.00 |
Meticulously struck and showing a faint hint of peripheral gold. Careful study with a glass finds a lint mark of two of minor visual importance. One of 470 Proofs struck and as delightful an example as is likely to be found today. This coin combines low mintage with significant beauty. |
|
1462 |
1867 Choice Brilliant Proof
|
CH BR PF |
$4,000.00 |
A pleasing array of iridescent color over deep watery fields. The strike is full including nice squared rims. There are some light hairlines under the toning but they do not overly detract. All in all, a decent example of this date of which only 625 proofs where struck. |

1463 |
1867 Breen 5478. Repunched 186. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated
|
CH BU |
$2,750.00 |
According to the late Walter Breen, this obverse die was first punched with the smaller date logotype intended for Half Dollars. The larger Dollar logotype was then punched over the first impression. The final date shows a short '1' under the definitive digit, fragments of smaller '8' and '6' under the final digits. Fully reflective silver mint lustre adds distinction to an exacting... more |

 - with claims to the Choice category. Light gold with iridescent toning about the rim. The strike is decent and the lustre is satiny. A very nice type coin. |
|
1465 |
1870'CC' Wide 'CC.' Brilliant Uncirculated
|
BU |
$4,500.00 |
 - with some claims to a higher grade. This obverse shows the '1' positioned to the right of the shield point, '7' is above the space between two denticles. The reverse shows a wide 'C C', a tiny spike extends up to the left from a denticle under the left foot of 'L' in DOL. This Carson City date is amazing in its two obverse and five reverse die varieties, considering that only 11,758... more |

1872'S'
|
CH EF |
$1,800.00 |
Choice Extremely Fine. Somewhat mottled brown-gold and steel toning distinguishes this example of a very late San Francisco date. The strike was sharp, and the devices remain virtually fully detailed after brief circulation, the surfaces retaining pleasing flash. Here is a thoroughly satisfying example of a Branch Mint date with only 9,000 pieces struck, few of which were preserved in... more |

1873 Choice Brilliant Proof
|
CH BR PF |
$1,300.00 |
Pervasive steel toning shows highlights of iridescent silver and pale blue for splendid visual effect, all over strongly flashing surfaces. The With Motto reverse boasts especially bold reflectivity. One of 600 Proofs struck, popular, as Breen noted, as the last year of the Liberty Seated Dollar coinage. |
