Bowers-Borckardt 21. Two Leaves Below Eagle CH VF $4,250.00 Choice Very Fine. The obverse is light gray with a few dark areas near the border. The central figure is distinctly outlined. The stars, lettering and date are also boldly defined. The reverse has some minor scratches that hardly detract. Here is a wonderful specimen of this Early Dollar that will surely please its new owner. 1400 1795 B.5. BB-27. Star 1 Free of Curl, 3 Leaves. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $90,000.00 The distinctive bar in the field extends downward into the field from the top curl, a few widely separated adjustment marks near the lower edge can be detected with a glass. This is distinguished by two berries in line below the first 'T' in STATES. Die State III shows a fine crack linking the left wreath stem end to the rim. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $12,000.00 Here is an exceptionally sharp example of this variety, defined by the bust of Liberty placed off-center to the left. The strike is exceptionally sharp throughout, including the eagle's breast feathers, though the feathers on the right leg are somewhat weak. Off-Center Bust CH AU $9,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Here is a second high quality example of this famous variety with bust placed too far left. This coin is beautifully struck with only a whisper of weakness at its centers. Smooth silver surfaces are bathed in clear tan-gold of the greatest delicacy. Large Date, Small Letters. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $13,000.00 - or virtually so. Gorgeous blue and rose-gold toning over nice lustrous surfaces. Nicely struck for the type with very pretty fields for the grade. No rim nicks or other impediments to detract from the attractive eye appeal of this example. A lovely coin sure to attract strong collector interest. 1408 1796 B.5. BB-65 (R-4). Large Date, Small Letters CH AU $26,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the cusp of full Mint State. Flashing silver lustre underlies pervasive rose and pearl on this boldly struck example of a scarce variety. Both Liberty and eagle show the most remarkably precise detail even at the centers, adding materially to the coin's splendid overall visual appeal. This coin's grade is higher than any listed in the JRCS Survey. NGC AU58. 1409 1797 B.1. BB-73 (R-3). Stars 9x7, Large Letters CH AU $11,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Lovely glowing rose-gold toning drenches both sides. The overall strike is quite bold, although a trace of weakness is apparent on the eagle's breast. This obverse shows 16 somewhat crowded stars, and the reverse wreath has three outside berries, five inside to identify this important variety. No example in this high grade is listed in the JRCS Census. NGC...  more 1410 1797 B.1. BB-73 (R-3). Stars 9x7, Large Letters EF $4,250.00 Extremely Fine. Very bright surfaces from a past light cleaning. The obverse strike is strong while the reverse is a bit weaker, especially on the eagle's breast. There are no major marks or rim nicks to detract. This coin exhibits all the cracks from Die State III as defined in the Bowers-Borckardt work on this series. 1411 1797 B.3. BB-71. Stars 10x6, Large Letters VF $7,900.00 Very Fine, perhaps a bit nicer. Iridescent toning on the obverse, the reverse mostly untoned. The strike is about average for the variety with some parts strong and others a bit weak. There are no major marks to detract from the very decent eye appeal of this example. 1412 1798 B.1. BB-82 (R-3). 13 Star Obverse EF $6,000.00 Extremely Fine. Attractive surfaces show tawny red-gold at the peripheries, especially bold at the close-digit date. This reverse shows Die State B with advanced vertical die crack through second 'T' of STATES, a horizontal crack through 'S OF AMERI'. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $30,000.00 This obverse is identified by a star that is placed very close to the 'L' of LIBERTY. Star 13 is a runt, displaying significantly smaller size than its other 12 shipmates. Subdued but definite flash in the delightfully smooth fields underlies delicate gray toning with an intriguing hint of gold. A wealth of crisp detail completes this coin's many visual attractions. 1414 1798 B.24. BB-124. Blundered Stars Reverse AU $5,250.00 About Uncirculated and virtually Choice. This reverse shows stars overlapping the clouds, die cracks from OF to cloud, end of stem to the rim. A suffusion of clear glowing rose covers the fields and reliefs, wear is minimal for harmonious beauty. No coin of this grade appears in the JRCS Survey. NGC AU53. 1415 1798 B.24. BB-124 AU $2,400.00 The details of an About Uncirculated coin but the surfaces exhibit the signs of a prior enhancement. Strong details except for four stars on the reverse, which is common with this die variety. The surfaces are smooth with no major nicks or adjustment marks to detract from the appeal of this example. There is a slight wave to the planchet, which is not uncommon with these earlier issues. 1416 1798 B.27. BB-113. Close Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $10,000.00 Rose-gold centers framed by sea-green and blue toning about the rim. The strike is precise with most of the intricate details plainly visible. The coin has a very good overall appearance. There are no major marks or rim problems to detract from the attractiveness of this early Silver Dollar. 1417 1798 B.27. BB-113 CH AU $7,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper from full Mint State. The die lines at stars 11 and 12 are quite clear on this obverse, as is the reverse die crack from the end of the olive stem. Rich iridescent blue circles the high rims, deep copper-gold follows around the stars and legend. Centers are enriched by tawny red-gold for bold effect. This grade is higher than any listed in the JRCS...  more 1418 1798 B.31. BB-113 (R-5). Pointed 9, High 8 CH EF $2,750.00 Choice Extremely Fine. The '8' in this distinctive date is notably higher than '179', nearly touching the drapery above it. The stars over the eagle are unusually boldly defined, unlike many examples of this much sought-after variety. Surfaces are pleasingly smooth and the obverse shows an exceptionally broad, boldly toothed border. An as-made planchet flaw at 6:00 shows as a short gap...  more 1419 1798 B.31. BB-113 (R-5). Pointed 9, High 8 CH VF $2,200.00 Choice Very Fine. This close date shows the '8' substantially higher than '179'. Stars over the eagle are notably weak as often seen on this elusive variety. This coin displays fascinating bright red-gold along with pervasive clear gold toning over its silvery surfaces. This grade is about median in the JRCS Census for this desirable variety. PCGS VF35. 1420 1799/8 B.3. BB.141 (R-3). 15 Star Reverse. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $52,500.00 Shades of interior lavender-russet are framed by areas of rose-gold and olive peripheral iridescence. A nicely balanced strike, and satiny underlying lustre both add to the countenance of this distinctive specimen. Examples of this important Red Book variety are very rare at the grade level offered here. It is highly doubtful that more than 4 to 8 such survivors would surpass the quality...  more 1421 1799/8 B.3. BB-141. (R-3). 15 Star Reverse. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $8,000.00 The obverse is remarkably sharp and crisply detailed, the reverse showing a trace of weakness on the shield. Delicate blue-gray and faint gold lave the smooth fields and devices to create unusual multi-colored beauty. Its remarkably high grade places the coin near the top of the JRCS listing for this key variety. 1422 1799 B.6. BB-162 (R-4) F $950.00 Fine. The light gray central device is completely outlined and surrounded by deeper gray fields. The reverse is intact with some central weakness. There are some obverse scratches and rim nicks. 1423 1799 B.9. BB-166. ''Apostrophe'' after STATES. CH AU $5,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Well centered date shows a short die crack below the base of '1', the reverse legend shows an apostrophe-like die dot after STATES that gives this popular variety its name. Delicate steel-gray outlines the sharp reliefs, with a faint wisp of rose lending color to the smooth fields. The grade would place this coin high in the JRCS Census. NGC AU55. 1424 1799 B.9. BB-166 CH VF $2,450.00 Choice Very Fine. A nice blend of gold and russet over gray toning. The strike is adequate and the surfaces have been well kept. There still is some underlying lustre in the protected areas. Another coin that is nearly a grade higher. PCGS VF35. 1425 1799 B.10. BB-163. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $6,000.00 - or thereabouts. Obverse stars are arranged 7x6, all devices are bold, the reverse ''cross hair'' die cracks meeting in the 'O' are delightfully sharp. Broad bands of steely blue toning intensify around the rims with hints of gold in the central fields. BB-163 AU $5,700.00 About Uncirculated and nearly Choice. This obverse shows a fine die crack linking the last three stars. The reverse is cracked from the rim through OF and the bases of AMERICA. A fascinating error makes the lettered edge read UNDRED CENTS. Beautifully struck with delightfully smooth silver surfaces subtly flavored with lightest lilac-gold. This obverse displays eight or more well-developed die cracks curving boldly through the field.
