 1851 Breen 5445. High Date, original. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. The digits in the date virtually touch the rocky base above them, identifying an original striking. The original business strike mintage is one of the rarest of the Liberty Seated Dollar series, with only 1,300 pieces struck. This example is the same die state as the piece in the American Numismatic Society cabinet, showing a short die crack under 'ON', another linking tops of UNITED. The fields are somewhat prooflike with uniform gunmetal toning showing a subtle undercurrent of red covering both fields and devices.
