Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1306 1794 Overton 101a (R-3) CH VG $5,000.00 Choice Very Good. First year of issue of the Half Dollar denomination. Two-year only type. Both sides of this scarce date are deeply toned in rich silver gray. The obverse has iridescent gold around the rim while the back is toned in places at the rim in pale green. The centers are essentially untoned, being a nice medium coin silver gray in color. There are some signs of an ancient...  more 1307 1795 O.105 (R-4+). Perfect Date VF $1,850.00 Very Fine. Light gray and pale golden rose color in the centers, while the peripheries are bathed in iridescent blue, green and rose toning. Well struck and exhibiting a bold center dot at the edge of the eagle's body. Here is a beautifully toned example of this second year of issue of the type. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $11,500.00 This highly distinctive variety displays curving die cracks at the top and base of date linked to the first five stars. The reverse olive branch shows the lowest berry with no stem. This coin boasts rich steel and glowing rose toning that enriches an amazingly sharp strike that accentuates all detail. '1' firmly touches the curl on this richly lustrous example of the final date of this historic type. Minimal wear may be detected on the high points, but the flashing lustrous beauty that this coin radiates is that of Mint State. NGC AU50. 1310 1807 O.110 F $280.00 Fine. Olive gray fields are punctuated by pleasing steel gray highlights. An attractive circulated piece that has all of its major detail intact. PCGS F15. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,200.00 Steel gray with areas of light gold toning gives this coin attractive eye appeal. A bit weakly struck in the central obverse as is usual. 1312 1818 O.106 CH AU $475.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Pearl gray and lustrous, with lavender gray toning that is a bit deeper on the reverse than on the obverse. 1313 1819/8 Small 9. O.101 EF $450.00 Extremely Fine. Touches of pale blue toning can be found on this steel gray example. A pleasing coin with only light wear. NGC XF45; 1821 O.102. This pale silver example is mildly circulated and shows original lustre in the protected areas. NGC XF45. 2 pieces. 1314 1826 O.105 AU $280.00 Extremely Fine. This steel gray example shows very bold details, but with signs of a past cleaning. PCI EF45; 1836 O.101a. About Uncirculated. Pale silver surfaces are ringed by pale gold at the obverse, and by magnificent electric blue tones at the reverse. ANACS AU50. 2 pieces. 1315 1832 O.103. Small Letters, 5 Recut at Upright. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $6,250.00 Bold silver flash underlies lightest steel and pervasive yet delicate rose toning. An exemplary strike results in amazingly bold detail on both sides, creating an overall harmony that seizes the viewer's attention. Whether the coin is sought for a top-quality variety or type collection, it would be hard to equal or improve upon this wonderfully bold early Half Dollar. The strike is strong on both sides. Some light hairlines are noted in the reverse fields. 1317 1834 O.106. Large Date, Small Letters. Large Crude 4 over Small 4 CH BU $1,000.00 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Marvelous silver cartwheel enlivens an exceptionally well-detailed impression of the dies. The large and clumsy 4 and the underlying digit are both boldly defined, giving this charming coin the added advantage of precise variety identity. Here is a Capped Bust coin as contemporary Americans would have seen it. PCGS MS63. 1318 1838 AU $320.00 About Uncirculated. Frosty mint bloom is evident clinging to the devices. Liberty Seated Half Dollars Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1319 1853 Arrows and Rays. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $4,750.00 - on the cusp of Gem. This fascinating type coin displays abundant, boldly frosty silver lustre with a gentle hint of gold at the peripheries. Here is a very well preserved specimen of this one-year type that is always in high demand as such. Only a few obverse tics hold this coin back from a higher grade. PCGS MS64. 1320 1853 Arrows and Rays. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00 - and virtually of Choice quality. Strongly impressed devices stand out boldly against bold mint frost in the fields, which are toned in concentric rings of orange-gold, sea green and blue toning. Here is a very eye-appealing survivor of this one-year only type. 1321 1858, 1876 CH AU $340.00 Choice About Uncirculated. The first coin is pale silver while the latter shows lovely amber and rose tones. Each coin is crisply struck, lustrous and a mere hint of rub away from full Mint State. Both are NGC AU58. 2 pieces. 1322 1858'S' AU $120.00 About Uncirculated. Here is a steel gray example that has sharp details and just a touch of wear. PCI AU50. 1323 1859 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,100.00 A marvelous array of iridescent gold and blue with some light rose. Well struck with lustre peaking out though the toning. A very appealing coin that is sure to please. 1324 1863 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $1,800.00 A pleasing example of this war-time issue, one of only 460 Proofs struck. One wonders what the Mint was thinking making Proof coins for sale while the nation was engaged in a bitter struggle for its very survival. The piece is beautifully toned in rich golden brown around the rims while the centers are bright and untoned. Liberty's figure is pleasantly frosty. The fields on both sides...  more 1325 1867 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $800.00 This specimen has football shaped obverse toning from extended storage in a Wayte Raymond board. The reverse, by contrast, is bright silver and untoned. The fields are fully mirrorlike and have lovely glassy surfaces. The central devices are fully frosty and the strike was sharp. Some hairlines are noted. Only 625 Proofs were struck this year. 1326 1870 Brilliant Proof BR PF $480.00 - with claims to Choice. The obverse and reverse both retain deep mirror surfaces. The central device, stars and date are fully detailed. 1327 1877'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,050.00 Russet and iridescent blue over well kept surfaces. The strike is full and the lustre is quite appealing. A very pleasing type coin. 1328 1884 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $700.00 Toned in a bull's-eye fashion with deep iridescent blue and gray around lighter silver centers. The fields are bright and flashy with full Proof brilliance. Light contact mark in the right obverse field. Only 875 Proofs were struck. Categories  •  Stack's June 2005 → United States Coins → U. S. Half Dollars → U. S. Barber Half Dollars Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1329 1896 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $480.00 Light peripheral toning embraces boldly struck devices. Fields with deep reflectivity are apparent on both the obverse and reverse. A few trivial facial lines are barely noticeable. 1330 1900 Brilliant Proof BR PF $460.00 - with some claims to Choice status. The rims are wreathed in iridescent blue toning while the centers are bright and frosty. The fields are full deep mirrors with lovely flash. A few hairlines keep this from a higher grade, notably two on Liberty's cheek. Only 912 Proofs were struck. 1331 1911 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $3,750.00 - close to higher grade. Glowing deep rose devices offer splendid visual contrast with the deep iridescent blue that coalesces at the razor-squared outer rims. One of only 682 Proofs struck, few of which exist today at this exceptionally high grade level, free of hairlines and marks that are all too often seen on early 20th century Proofs. Here is a coin that will repay the closest study....  more 1332 1913 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $3,750.00 - on the cusp of fully Superb. Fabulous glass-smooth surfaces offer brilliant reflectivity, laved in clear pearl and subtle gold of great delicacy. One of 768 Proofs struck, and a coin that would be exceptionally hard to duplicate in terms of sheer visual appeal. NGC PF66. 1333 1913 BU $340.00 Choice Very Fine. A few light facial tics over steel gray toning. Scarce with only 188,627 struck including proofs; 1917'S' Obverse Mintmark. Very Good with full rims but has a few reverse tics; 1947 Brilliant Uncirculated with a decent strike and pale golden toning. 3 pieces. 1334 1913'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,700.00 - very nearly Gem. Glimmering mint frost bathes this coin's surfaces, while the central devices are very well struck and defined for this date that is very scarce in high grades.
