Small Planchet. Noe 17 (R-3) VF $1,800.00 68.6 grains. Very Fine. Here is a pleasing, medium coin silver gray specimen with overtones of rose and gold. A curious elongation of the planchet above the 'V' of MASATHVSETS reveals a very well done ''plug'' and reengraving of the affected letters. Despite this shortcoming, the eye appeal of this Small Planchet issue is quite high. 1002 1785 Connecticut copper. Miller 4.1-F.4. Mailed Bust Right. ''African Head.'' F to VF $135.00 145.7 grains. Fine to Very Fine from the actual point of wear. Surfaces have taken on a salmon-brown coloration from a past cleaning from which this coin is slowly recovering. ''African Head'' motif is strong, 1785 date is a trifle weak. Surfaces are lightly granular. 1003 1787 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 3-G (R-3-) VG $65.00 155.1 grains. Very Good. Half Cents Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1004 1793 Breen 3, Cohen 3 (R-3). Short 7, Low 'L,' Crowded Fraction F-12 $3,700.00 Fine-12 or thereabouts in terms of detail. Olive-brown surfaces show some microscopic granularity. The obverse is pleasingly bold with a well detailed bust, clear LIBERTY and very distinct date. The reverse is more obviously granular and is generally less sharply defined with a narrow lamination near the rim at 12:00. 1005 1794 Br.9, C.9. High Relief Head, Heavy Wreath. Small Edge Letters VF-20 $3,000.00 Very Fine-20. An exceptionally bold obverse is framed in a tall toothed border protecting a remarkably sharp LIBERTY, date and head. The reverse strike is less pronounced with a low rim allowing greater apparent wear on the outer legend. '1' in the fraction touches the left wreath tie. This coin displays a pleasing light tan patina. 1006 1828 Br.1, C.1. 13 Stars, Leaf below 'S.' Mint State-64 MS-64 $3,000.00 Magnificent full mint red lustre drenches this beautifully struck example, whose bold cartwheel reflectivity shows the Classic Head design at its finest. Large Cents Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1007 1793 Sheldon 3. Chain AMERICA. No Periods after date, LIBERTY. F-15 $6,000.00 Fine-15 in terms of actual detail. Surfaces are a very deep chestnut brown, verging on ebony depending on the angle of the light. Fields are uniformly very granular, which has somewhat weakened the legends and date. The obverse effigy of Liberty and the all important chain on the reverse are fortunately very boldly defined. A rather large edge bruise at 10:30 on the reverse serves to...  more 1008 1793 S.4 (R-3). Chain AMERICA. Periods after date, LIBERTY. VF-20 $5,000.00 Very Fine-20 in strict terms of wear. The nicely detailed low-relief Liberty head is positioned between very sharp LIBERTY and date, each followed by a bold period or pellet. The reverse bears an uneven outer legend with an edge bump penetrating AMERICA. A number of field marks can be seen, including marks over and around ONE CENT. Light brown and fascinating. 1009 1798 S.171. Style 2 hair EF-40 $310.00 Sharpness of an Extremely Fine-40 coin exhibiting dark and granular surfaces. Strong obverse sharpness, especially on Liberty's hair. A heavy obverse die cud at the upper left rim, but no subsidiary break yet. 1010 1800/1798 S.190. Overdate. Style 1 hair EF-40 $625.00 Sharpness of Extremely Fine-40. Light brown and gold on somewhat granular surfaces. Two insignificant rim bruises. State I of the dies. 1011 1803 S.258. Small Date. Large Fraction EF-40 $460.00 Extremely Fine-40. Some scattered marks but none too serious. Strong detail but the surfaces have been cleaned leaving a partial red patina. 1012 '1804 Restrike.' Mint State-60 MS-60 $525.00 Here is an especially fascinating example of one of the most famous creations of the early 19th century. Light brown surfaces show heavy die rust on the altered 1803 obverse die and the impression of the 1820 reverse die is very faint. Added to this, the reverse has been repeatedly stabbed by some chisel-like device, leaving a number of straight cuts toward the center, possibly by some...  more 1013 1811 S.287. Perfect Date AU-50 $1,800.00 About Uncirculated-50. A bold, slightly off-center strike results in boldest detail, notably on Liberty's locks and wreath leaves. Pleasing light reddish-brown surfaces are subtly reflective and a glass catches tiny obverse tics left of the bust point. 1014 1812 S.289. Large Date AU-50 $400.00 About Uncirculated-50 in detail. Lightly off-center strike is seen in rims of uneven width. Light brown surfaces show scattered reddish obverse stains but the fine detail is exceptional throughout. 1015 1813 S.292. Distant Star AU-50 $500.00 About Uncirculated-50. This complex example of the War of 1812 coinage combines a very high technical grade with microgranular reddish-brown surfaces that give the coin a rather odd, blurry appearance. 1016 1814 S.294. Crosslet 4 AU-55 $350.00 About Uncirculated-55 in terms of detail with a light mint red patina. The strike is strong and there are no major marks to detract. The coin has been lightly cleaned many years ago and now has started to tone. Still quite attractive for the grade. 1017 1834 N.3½. Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters. Mint State-60 MS-60 $600.00 - or finer. Very pleasing deep brown with considerable mint red remaining around the devices. Clear double profile. Hairlined. Struck from the late states of the dies. Dies rotated about 45 degrees from normal. 1018 1834 N.5 CH BU $260.00 Fine-12 in terms of wear but the surfaces are pebbled and have areas of pitting; 1862 Extremely Fine. Well struck, a few scattered marks; 1890 Brilliant Uncirculated. Lightly dipped; 1891 Brilliant Uncirculated with some red remaining in the protected areas; 1909 Indian. Brilliant Uncirculated but has been previously cleaned; 1909 V.D.B.(3) Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Each with nice mint red; 1911'S' About Uncirculated....  more 1019 1837 N.13. Plain Hair Cords. Mint State-63 MS-63 $375.00 Here is a most pleasing Large Cent displaying deep olive brown color with glowing rose red at the edges of the devices and legends. PCGS MS65RD. 1023 1869 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $475.00 An attractive red brown iridescence creates a distinctive visual effect on this fully detailed coin. Deep reflectivity is apparent on both surfaces. 1024 1881 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $260.00 Here is a gorgeous, fully reflective specimen featuring iridescent magenta and blue tones amidst dominant brown color. 1025 1882, 1887, 1895 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $240.00 The first two are mostly red, while the last is brown with much glowing original red. The 1882 has a curious planchet flaw at the top obverse and bottom reverse. 3 pieces. 1026 1884 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $160.00 A light brown radiance enhances both obverse and reverse. Mirror-like fields surround bold devices. 1027 1895 Broadstruck about 10% off-center CH AU $210.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Rich mahogany brown surfaces characterize this popular and attractive striking error. 1028 1899 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $275.00 Glass-like surfaces retain an impressive sunset patina. Examination reveals crisply struck details. 1029 1902 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $2,000.00 - on the edge of fully Superb. Blazing red fields show impressive mirror depth, and the minutely detailed devices and legends seem suspended over these deeply gleaming fields to create altogether arresting eye appeal.
