Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2345 1839'C' VF $3,000.00 Very Fine or better. This Charlotte Mint coin circulated freely, as evidenced by the uniform wear on its deep golden surfaces. A glass finds an abrasion on the cheek and a couple of small toning dots on either side, but this Branch Mint coin's overall visual quality is quite high. PCGS VF25. 2346 1840'D' AU $2,000.00 About Uncirculated in terms of wear. The overall strike is very full, with a particularly clear 'D' mintmark. Close examination shows some smoothing of the cheek to eliminate a mark, and there is a field scratch above the eagle. 2347 1842'C' Large Date CH VF $1,800.00 Choice Very Fine, close to Extremely Fine. Smooth, deeply golden surfaces are highlighted by narrow halos of deeper tan-gold around the reliefs that contribute to the coin's bold visual appeal. This prominent variety was absent from the definitive Norweb holdings. PCGS VF35. 2348 1844'C' AU $6,250.00 About Uncirculated. Rich yellow gold lustre hugs the devices and legends on this well struck specimen. Under high magnification, the left and right obverse fields exhibit either light abrasion or perhaps a past attempt to smooth out the fields. In addition, Miss Liberty's bun and the hair on the top of her head are curiously flattened. Here is an overall very appealing survivor of a mintage...  more 2349 1848'D' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $8,750.00 A coin with excellent lustre that overshadows the moderate green-gold patina. The strike is amazing for a coin of this vintage since most examples of this date are poorly struck. A couple of small marks on the cheek and a few hairlines are this coin's main detraction. This date is quite rare in Mint State with the estimate being about 5 or 6 pieces in that lofty condition. A trophy for...  more 2350 1851, 1882 VF $300.00 Very Fine. Normal wear is seen on both, some red-gold hugs the denticles on both solidly detailed examples of these dates. 2 pieces. 2351 1855'C' CH AU $1,900.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A well struck example with bold detail. Much lustre still remains with both sides being somewhat reflective. Lightly cleaned in the past, a rim nick is also noted above 'TA' of STATES. Deep orange-gold with coppery overtones, this specimen's surface coloration is unlike that found on most other Charlotte mint gold coins. Here is a more than acceptable example of this...  more 2352 1856 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $700.00 - but the coin has been evenly cleaned on both sides. Good lustre still remaining over well struck surfaces. A scarcer No Motto type coin. 2353 1856'C' VF $1,100.00 Very Fine. Wear is uniform and free of special problems, surfaces display an understated matte gold. This generally pleasing coin's grade is about average for known survivors of a Charlotte mintage of 28,457 pieces. 2354 1860'C' EF $2,200.00 Extremely Fine. Actual circulation is relatively moderate, but some scattered ancient surface marks are to be seen on this example of the second to last Charlotte Half Eagle. This is a relatively high grade among survivors of the 14,813 struck of this Branch Mint date. PCGS XF40. 2355 1870'CC' EF $3,500.00 Extremely Fine or so in terms of actual wear. Here is a coin that led a past life as a piece of jewelry, with a hole above Liberty's head that has now been filled and the relevant details re-engraved. Surfaces are a bit glossy, dusky antique gold hue and are uniformly lightly porous. A mere 7,675 pieces were coined of this inaugural Carson City mint Half Eagle, making this a very desirable,...  more 2356 1870'S' CH VF $2,200.00 Choice Very Fine. Circulation is mild and free of special problems with measurable lustre remaining in the protected areas. One of 17,000 struck long before collecting by mintmark became popular. 2357 1873 Open 3 AU $260.00 About Uncirculated. Considerable lustre with a few scattered tics define this example of an important variety of this date. 2358 1879, 1879'S', 1881'S' EF $500.00 Extremely Fine. All show some retained lustre, some faint red-gold on the first and last of this interesting trio. 3 pieces. 2359 1879'S' CH AU $150.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Some minor obverse nicks. Light hairlines in the field from a past cleaning. Well defined devices with pleasing lustre and color. 2360 1880 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,500.00 - a virtual Gem offering scintillating red-gold lustre of the greatest beauty. Here is an allegedly common date which is remarkably elusive in Choice and higher grade. 2361 1880'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,600.00 - on the cusp of fully Gem. A forceful strike results in bold detail, with the 'S' mintmark filled and offset far to the left over the left serif of 'V'. 2362 1880'S' CH EF $320.00 Choice Extremely Fine; 1881 About Uncirculated. The first displays delicate red-gold lustre, the Companion is bright yellow lustre for notable appeal. 2 pieces. 2363 1881 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,000.00 Plentiful frosty yellow-gold lustre bathes both sides, boosting the appeal of a forceful and exacting strike. 2364 1881 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $200.00 - and near-Choice. Fascinating frosty golden lustre is brighter around the sharply defined stars and legend. 2365 1881 CH AU $380.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A fully lustrous example that is bordering on Mint State; 1896 About Uncirculated. A good deal of lustre and some coppery gold toning can be found in the protected areas of this example. 2 pieces. 2366 1882 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $260.00 - or finer. Frosty mint lustre characterizes this coin. Some superficial staccato nicks along the jaw and in the fields. 2367 1882'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $280.00 - and on the cusp of Choice with bright lustrous surfaces. 2368 1883, 1895 CH EF $460.00 Extremely Fine; 1897 Choice Extremely Fine. Light circulation defines this trio, the second coin offers a slight planchet bulge for added interest. 3 pieces. 2369 1885 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $240.00 Delightful lustrous gold shows traces of deeper red-gold along the denticles. 2370 1885'S' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $3,250.00 Glowing full cartwheel lustre highlights the quality of a magnificent strike. 2371 1885'S', 1886'S' AU $325.00 About Uncirculated. The first shows bold red toning, the second is lustrous yellow-gold. 2 pieces. 2372 1886 AU $150.00 About Uncirculated. A lovely rose gold patina enhances this virtually Mint State specimen. 2373 1886'S' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $210.00 Sharp frosted devices float on very original surfaces with the obverse semi-prooflike. Rim bump at 11:00. 2374 1891 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $8,250.00 Original frosty gold surfaces with semi-prooflike reflectivity in the fields. The surfaces are remarkable as so few signs of handling are present, with no significant scuffs or nicks that impair the frost. This coin has been held in a collection for many years and has managed to remain quite pristine.
