Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1570 1798/7 JR-1 (R-3). 16 Reverse Stars G $700.00 Good in strict terms of wear and detail. Variety diagnostics are bold but the surfaces show ancient scratches and a couple of obverse digs, as is normal to these often wretchedly preserved early Dimes. 1571 1800 JR-2 (R-5). Wide A's on Reverse Legend F $600.00 Strong Fine in overall detail. The rim is crimped at 3 to 4:00, surfaces show old, removable Scotch tape residue on this example of the rarest variety of the date. 1572 1802 JR-2 (R-5). Third 'T' over Cloud Edge EF $1,600.00 Very Fine, the reverse exhibiting detail and light lustre of an Extremely Fine coin. Though circulated, this coin displays substantial detail, the obverse was cleaned and shows a right field scratch in addition to a mint-made planchet streak. Here is a very acceptable example of this rare variety. 1573 1803 JR-4 (R-5). 'T' over Cloud Edge, Right Reverse Shattered VG $900.00 Very Good, the reverse boasting the detail of a Very Fine or better coin. The bright silver-gray obverse is typically weak and framed by peripheral toning, while blue and russet cover the entire reverse. A tiny rim pinch at 9:00 on the reverse hallmarks this specimen of a rare die variety. 1574 1805 JR-1. 5 Berries VG $200.00 Very Good details. A full date example, but the planchet is bent and scratched. Most of the major design details are visible. 1575 1807 JR-1 VG $70.00 Very Good details, with the '7' in the date crudely altered to appear as a '1.' The flan is punched at 11:00 on the obverse and there is flan damage on the left side of the reverse. 1576 1807 JR-1 AG $110.00 About Good. Capped Bust Dimes Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1577 1809 JR-1 CH VF $700.00 Choice Very Fine. The '9' in the date leans to the right. An example with a great deal of clear details, and lovely cinnamon and sea-green toning blossoming toward the rims. 1578 1811/9 JR-1 VF $400.00 Very Fine. A desirable example with character. Sea-green toning and faded russet are splashed among the stars at the rim. The reverse shows multiple die cracks, but the devices are strong at the center and overlayed with a soft gray patina. 1579 1814 JR-1 (R-3). Small Date CH AU $1,800.00 Choice About Uncirculated, very close to full Mint State. Here is an exceptionally high quality example of the only Small Date variety, boasting a vividly detailed strike and richest reverse toning that might be easily imagined. 1580 1822 JR-1 G $500.00 Good. Scarce in any grade, and this example is a coin with honest wear. Almost a full Liberty exists on the headband, the date is virtually complete and the rim and stars are intact. The reverse shows the most wear since the striking pressure was uneven between the obverse and reverse dies. An even, soft gray patina covers the obverse and reverse. 1581 1831 JR-1. 3-Line Shield Stripes, Arrow Detached. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,000.00 This distinctive reverse shows the upper arrow shaft boldly detached. This sharply struck coin is distinguished by iridescent silver and light blue with a wisp of clearest gold completing its colorful toning. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,500.00 Here is a jewel-sharp example of this only No Stars date of this then-new Southern Branch Mint. Fields are delightfully smooth, complementing the boldly formed devices, all laved in pleasing, delicate red-gold, rose and blue toning for exceptional appeal. 1583 1841 CH AU $110.00 Choice About Uncirculated, and well struck, but with rough surfaces; 1876'S' Choice About Uncirculated, though rather weakly struck. A piece with character, showing a faded red and gray patina. 2 pieces. 1584 1844 F $310.00 Fine. A handsome example of this scarce date showing a full LIBERTY and lots of detail on the reverse. Only normal, minor circulation marks exist on this piece. Deep russet toning toward the rims, on the obverse, and mottled faded red and gunmetal blue toning on the reverse, give this piece a handsome appearance. A soft gray finish covers both sides. Just 72,500 pieces were coined. 1585 1846 VF $320.00 Very Fine. A decent example of this better date piece showing only moderate wear. Spotted charcoal toning shows on the surface, on both sides, under a fog-gray patina. 1586 1856'S' VF $400.00 Very Fine. An acceptable example of this scarce date, with mottled charcoal and faded sea-green toning. Hairlines and light, old cleaning have now been toned over. 1587 1857'O' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $250.00 A handsome piece, nicely struck, and showing faded russet toning in the field blossoming to an attractive royal blue at the stars. The reverse shows an even faded russet patina with occasional royal blue highlights at the rim. 1588 1858'S' G $410.00 Good. A decent example of this rather scarce issue, with full rims and no problems; 1860'O' Good. Clear date and mintmark but cleaned at one time and now toned over. A rare date. 2 pieces. 1589 1859'O' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $375.00 - with a great strike and pleasing surfaces. Soft lustre shimmers under original, splashed, faded red and brown toning. 1590 1859'S' VF $600.00 Very Fine. A nice steel-gray patina gives this scarce issue a handsome appearance. Nicely struck with only light to moderate wear. 1591 1862 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $100.00 - but with evidence of mishandling. To its credit, it is still a reasonably struck piece with no major defects. A soft white example with some light peripheral toning. 1592 1864'S' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $500.00 Finely detailed devices and smooth fields display light orange-gold and a hint of blue. The reverse shows a sharply defined, lightly recessed bull's eye circle behind ONE DIME. 1593 1865'S' AU $400.00 About Uncirculated. Areas of deep copper-gold and a soft strike characterize this lightly cleaned San Francisco coin. 1594 1870'S' VG $225.00 Very Good, with a full LIBERTY, but with faded rims. A date that is scarce in all grades. 1595 1878'CC' Type II reverse. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $950.00 Delightful smooth silver shows old-gold at the obverse rim, deep blue across the reverse. A raised die line slants down from the drapery above Liberty's knee to the shield. 1596 1879 Superb Gem Brilliant Proof SUP GEM BR PF $1,600.00 Immaculate shimmering silver drenches both sides of this spectacular coin, framed by the sharpest wire rims. There can be few Proofs in existence that can measure up to this fully Superb example, which is certainly among the finest survivors of a Proof mintage of 1,100 pieces. 1597 1880 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $650.00 - a near-Gem boasting bold prooflike flash beneath iridescent peripheral blue surround centers laved in the most delicate gold. 1598 1881 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $850.00 - on the cusp of full Gem and a virtually unimprovable example of a Proof mintage of only 975 pieces. Mirror silver shows just a tantalizing hint of pale gold at the rims. 1599 1881 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $525.00 A delightful example with a full strike and mostly mark-free fields.
