Lustre around the reliefs give vitality to this lightly circulated example of a business strike issue of 3,500 pieces. Breen asserted that most surviving examples of this elusive date are Extremely Fine. 2298 1871 EF to AU $1,500.00 Extremely Fine. Moderate circulation is most apparent on the high points, some deep red-gold toning outlines the peripheries and legend for bold visual effect. Only 1,300 business strikes were produced, and the majority of the examples today are Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. 2299 1872 CH AU $3,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This example of 2,000 business strikes is one of this date's early strikes, identifiable by its distinctly prooflike reflectivity. This Centennial year date was struck in a Proof-only mintage of just 45 pieces. His Proof coinage researches enabled the late Walter Breen to estimate that only 25 to 30 survivors exist today. Here is a very attractive specimen of one of the most available dates in the series. 2311 1878 AU $800.00 About Uncirculated. Coppery toning within the devices accompanies some light field hairlines. The detail is strong for the grade and some protected lustre remains. 2312 1879 CH AU $2,800.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the cusp of full Mint State. Lustre saturates this very faintly circulated example, showing particularly reflective depth around the boldly defined reliefs. Close examination finds a few inconspicuous hairlines in the mirrored fields. 2313 1880 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,000.00 - or virtually so. This attractive coin displays a needle-sharp strike and delightfully smooth fields. The deep gold color is remarkably uniform and appealing with only the most subtle traces of light polish from long ago. One of 1,000 business strikes. 2314 1881 CH AU $6,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Both sides boast smooth fields and precise reliefs that are heavily lustrous and show only a wisp of light and uncomplicated wear. Only 500 business strikes were produced of this historic late date, which is earnestly sought by Type and date collectors. 2315 1882 Br.6396. 2 over High 2 CH AU $1,200.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Powerful prooflike flash adds to the visual impact of this delightful strike. This date shows a boldly repunched '2' partially visible to the naked eye. This specimen is one of 1,500 business strikes and is as satisfying an example as is likely to be found on today's quality-focused market. 2316 1883 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,500.00 Lustrous surfaces show evidence of being gently cleaned. Very well struck giving this coin nice appeal. One of only 900 pieces struck for circulation making, this date quite difficult to acquire. 2317 1883 AU $3,500.00 About Uncirculated. Very modest traces of brief circulation can be sought out on the high points. Only 900 business strikes were produced, and satisfying semi-prooflike reflectivity adds significantly to this coin's visual charm. 2318 1884 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $22,000.00 - a virtual Gem of overwhelming beauty and appeal. Lustre is rich and uniform, semi-prooflike in its forceful reflectivity and wonderfully free of distracting marks.
