Here is a high-grade example offering much lustre around the reliefs highlighting the boldly struck devices. The small-letter word DOLLARS is very sharp, contrasting with a slightly weaker 1854. 2267 1854 AU $1,300.00 About Uncirculated. This handsome coin is generally lustrous with wear confined to the higher locks of Liberty's hair, a few hairlines and scuffs at 54 identify this example. 2268 1854 AU $1,600.00 About Uncirculated. This virtually Mint State specimen retains pleasing lustre on both surfaces. There is a lamination on the rim at the right side of the obverse. 2269 1854 EF $600.00 Extremely Fine. A pleasing champagne glaze adorns this mark-free example. Lightly worn details characterize this first year of issue type. 2270 1854 VF $500.00 Very Fine. This coin shows normal circulation, hints of lustre linger in the legend and around the reliefs. Here is a very collectible example of the small DOLLARS sub-type. 2271 1854'D' AU $30,000.00 About Uncirculated. Here is an exceptionally boldly struck example of the only Dahlonega date of this denomination. The rims are unusually full and very sharply raised and the devices, date and lettering are exemplary throughout. Topping off the coin's quality is a delightfully sharp 'D' mintmark. This coin is an outstanding example of the second rare Branch Mint production, one of 24,000 struck of this sole New Orleans date in the $3 series. Outstanding quality is shown in the sharply raised rims, meticulous devices, legend and date. The 'O' is crisply defined, not weak as described by Akers, and nearly touches the wreath tie. The strike is very sharp and the coin's beauty is complemented by the total originality of its boldly glowing lustre. Wear is problem-free and appropriate to the grade, leaving this coin pleasingly bold in its devices and legend. 2275 1855'S' AU $7,500.00 About Uncirculated. One of 6,600 struck and a high quality example offering full strike and abundant lustre. A glass finds a few faint hairlines but actual circulation is remarkably mild and problem-free. This coin's splendid strike is enhanced by substantial lustre showing faintly red-gold near the outer rims. Here is a specimen that is wholly delightful for inclusion in any high quality date or type collection of U.S. Gold. 2277 1856'S' Medium Mintmark CH AU $5,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Lustre is glowing and marks are minimal on this unusually attractive and very lightly circulated example. Such actual wear as can be seen must also be called minimal. Careful study reveals that the 'S' mintmark is notably doubled at the top and is positioned very near the wreath tie directly above it. 2278 1856'S' Medium Mintmark VF $850.00 Very Fine. Pleasing orange-gold surfaces exhibit hints of gently glowing lustre in the very most protected areas of the devices and legends. A few old circulation marks are noted on both sides. 2279 1856'S' Small Mintmark CH AU $4,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A richly lustrous example boasting a full and exacting impression of the dies. This desirable, naked-eye variety is known as the ''Small Mintmark,'' though the sharply defined 'S' might be more accurately described as ''Minute.'' It is easily recognized by size and by its position in the field well below the wreath tie. 2280 1857 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $6,500.00 Deeply lustrous yellow-gold approaches subtle red-gold nearest the needle-sharp rims. An especially meticulous strike assures a wealth of fine detail for added attraction. Here is an example of total quality that will repay the most careful examination. As either a date example or a Type coin, this wonderfully lustrous specimen would be hard to improve. 2281 1857'S' AU $4,500.00 About Uncirculated with the lustrous flash of Choice. One of 14,000 struck of this second San Francisco date. A meticulous strike creates splendid detail and the delightfully smooth fields display especially vivid prooflike reflectivity concentrating at the peripheries. Here is a thoroughly satisfying example for any quality collection. PCGS AU50. 2282 1857'S' CH F $800.00 Choice Fine. Wear is actually moderate and completely appropriate to this grade. This example of a desirable San Francisco date displays yellow-gold surfaces with three or four toning freckles but no troubling special problems. 2283 1858 AU $3,000.00 About Uncirculated, or finer. Bright lustrous surfaces exhibit just a few light blemishes to affect this coin's eye appeal. Quite scarce with only 2,133 pieces struck. 2284 1858 AU $4,500.00 About Uncirculated and approaching the Choice category. Overall detail is pleasingly full and considerable lustre adds materially to the coin's attractions. One of only 2,133 struck, making this an important date on many want lists of U.S. Gold Type and date collectors. It is eagerly sought in any available grade. 2285 1859 CH EF $1,100.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Light wear is apparent on the highest points, surface marks are of minimal visual importance. Pleasing lustre remains around the bold reliefs and in the protected areas on either side for fascinating effect. 2286 1860 CH AU $1,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated in strict terms of wear. Substantial lustre adds to the coin's visual appeal but careful examination finds short but measurable pinscratches on either side. 2287 1860'S' VF $1,400.00 Very Fine. Wear is unmistakable but much red-gold lustre remains in the protected areas. This desirable example is one of 7,000 struck at the San Francisco Mint with a significant number immediately melted on the cusp of the great Civil War. 2288 1861 EF $1,400.00 Extremely Fine. Boldly detailed with strong devices standing out boldly from the remarkably smooth fields. One of 5,959 struck, a coin offering basically inconsequential wear without serious visual challenges. 2289 1862 Br.6367. Indistinct Neckline. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,250.00 - approaching Choice. Exuberant die polishing at the Philadelphia Mint assured that the front of Liberty's neck would be very faintly indicated, grading off imperceptibly into the smooth field. This distinctive variety was characterized as ''very rare'' by the late Walter Breen. Evenly distributed deep yellow lustre gives this coin its very real visual distinction. 2290 1863 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,750.00 - nearly Choice. Abundant deep yellow lustre highlights the devices and fields that show bold and intriguing die clash. One of 5,000 business strikes made in the depths of the Civil War. Careful examination reveals evidence of a light dipping years ago, but the coin retains its generally high quality. 2291 1864 CH AU $2,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, not far from full Mint State. Circulation, while present, is essentially undetectable on this delightfully lustrous example of a business strike mintage of 2,630 pieces. Close study reveals traces of a light cleaning in the distant past, which offers only minimal visual distraction. 2292 1865 CH AU $8,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the cusp of Mint State with delightfully prooflike fields adding significantly to this sharply struck coin's beauty. One of only 1,140 business strikes produced and a classic scarcity of this series. Some light field marks from past bag storage add another dimension to this coin's already outstanding frosty reflectivity. 2293 1866 CH AU $1,600.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A forceful strike results in wholly satisfying detail. Careful scrutiny reveals signs of a gentle wiping years ago, though the coin's refreshing overall lustre continues to boost its quality and undeniably strong visual appeal.
