This smooth, evenly worn, greenish-golden example still retains evidence of understated mint lustre in the fields on both the obverse and reverse. The strike, though by no means full, is actually quite strong for a specimen of this notoriously weak issue. Some hairlines are evident but the coin's details are sharp. 1584 1850 CH AU $425.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the threshold of full Mint State. Devices are delightfully full, fields shows a scattering of minute contact tics from bag storage long ago. NGC AU58. 1585 1851'O' (2) AU $400.00 About Uncirculated. A uniformly matched pair of minimally circulated coins. Both retain areas of visible lustre among the devices. Close scrutiny reveals some faint lines. 2 pieces. 1586 1855 CH AU $225.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper from full Mint State. Substantial lustre joins a forcefully detailed strike to assure undeniable visual quality. NGC AU58. 1587 1856, 1868'S' CH F to VF $131.00 Choice Fine to Very Fine details. The first coin is a pale lemon yellow and the second is a coppery gold. Both are holed for suspension. 2 pieces. 1588 1856'O' EF $750.00 Extremely Fine. Light yellow-gold surfaces show very moderate wear with some lustre at the rims. Akers calls this New Orleans date ''definitely a 'sleeper.' It is uncommon in any condition....'' Just 21,100 were coined of this date. 1589 1858 CH AU $375.00 Choice About Uncirculated, virtually Mint State both in terms of wear and in visual quality. Abundant peripheral lustre contributes to this coin's overall appeal. NGC AU58. 1590 1861 Brilliant Uncirculated. New Reverse BU $550.00 Deep orange-gold toning over frosty surfaces. The strike is crisp and the surfaces are decent for the grade despite some light abrasion. 1591 1868'S' AU $1,300.00 About Uncirculated with deep orange-gold toning. The lustre is quite appealing and the strike is strong and adds to the overall appeal of this scarce date of which only 34,000 pieces where struck. 1592 1868'S' CH EF $280.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A satisfying amber patina covers both surfaces of this post Civil War Quarter Eagle. Typical friction is confined to the obverse hair strands and Eagle's breast on the reverse. NGC XF45. 1593 1872'S' CH EF $550.00 Choice Extremely Fine with the eye appeal of higher grade. While visible, this coin's circulation is limited and free of special problems. One of 18,000 struck, few of which were preserved in the pre-mintmark collecting era. NGC XF45. 1594 1873 Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00 - with bold claims to Choice. Lovely full lustre and sharp strike are joined by scattered marks which offer minimal little distraction to the viewer. NGC MS62. 1595 1881 EF $3,000.00 Extremely Fine. Greenish-gold toning with some lustre still present in the protected areas. Sharply struck with most detail sharp. The surfaces are smooth with little if any marks to detract from the overall eye appeal. A very rare date with only 640 pieces struck, the fourth lowest mintage of the entire Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series. 1596 1882 CH AU $450.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper from Mint State. Red-gold lustre drenches both sides of this lightly bagmarked coin. Actual wear is remarkably faint on the bold devices. NGC AU58. 1597 1901 CH AU $180.00 Choice About Uncirculated and very close to Mint State. Frosty surfaces give this coin a respectable look. Decently struck. 1598 1902 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $375.00 - approaching Choice. Subtle red-gold lustre enriches this very precise Philadelphia strike for outstanding beauty. 1599 1905 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $2,400.00 Vivid yellow-gold lustre drenches both sides of this beautifully struck full Gem, a glass finds few minute copper spots. 1600 1905 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $600.00 Stunning coppery gold lustre amplifies this vividly struck example. The resulting visual effect makes this coin worthy of an inspection. 1601 1905 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $400.00 Deep orange-gold toning over very nicely struck surfaces. The lustre beams off the well preserved surfaces giving this coin a great look. 1602 1905 CH AU $325.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This satiny specimen is just on the cusp of a Mint State distinction. Subtle orange-golden toning is most evident at the peripheries. 1603 1906 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $240.00 This rich honey gold example is quite frosty. Besides an obverse area of light tooling, this coin has very nice surfaces. 1604 1907 Superb Gem Brilliant Proof SUP GEM BR PF $14,000.00 Deeply reflective, chrome-like surfaces wholly surround richly frosted, gold-toned devices on this seriously high quality specimen. Given the high number of pieces of Proof Gold that were mishandled or otherwise impaired over the years, it is refreshing to find such an unadulterated and fresh specimen.
