CH AU $6,000.00 Very Choice About Uncirculated, nearly fully Brilliant Uncirculated in terms of quality. Both sides are a nice, pale yellow gold in color. The fields show some original mint frost around the stars and there are partial cartwheels showing on the reverse. Liberty's hair curls are mostly sharp at the back, typically softer on the high points. Classic Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1807 1834 Second Head. Plain 4 EF $475.00 Extremely Fine. Light yellow gold in the centers, deeper gold and some coppery toning around the rims on both sides. First year of issue of the redesigned obverse type. Minor rim marks. 1808 1834 Second Head. Plain 4. Triple punched '4' CH VF $325.00 Choice Very Fine. The first year of issue of this type, and an acceptable example that shows a great deal of detail. Lightly hairlined from an old cleaning. 1809 1834 First Head. Plain 4 VF $275.00 Very Fine. Though cleaned, it is still an undiminished example of this early, scarce type. 1810 1835 Second Head. Small Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,100.00 - with some claims to an even higher grade. Both sides are a nice, bright yellow gold in color. The fields are brightly reflective and semi-prooflike with sharp flash in the fields and faintly in the vertical shield lines. This appears to be the script '8' variety of the date. 1811 1838 Small Arrows, Large 5 CH EF $950.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Medium yellow gold in color. Some light obverse rim marks at left. Liberty Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1812 1842'D' Small Date CH AU $4,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated. A high grade example of this Dahlonega Mint issue. Both sides are an attractive pale yellow gold in color. The majority of the survivors of this issue are found in Very Fine or even lower grades, marking this example as an important coin. Only 59,608 were struck. 1813 1844'D' VF $1,400.00 Very Fine. Another low mintage Dahlonega Mint Half Eagle. Only 88,982 were struck. Medium yellow gold color and some pleasing detail still remaining. 1814 1844'O' CH EF $450.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A pleasing example of an early $5 Liberty, nicely struck and with virtually full detail. Only a light, old cleaning bars this coin from a higher grade. 1815 1846'O' EF $1,750.00 Extremely Fine. Both date and New Orleans mintmark testify to this coin's bold strike. The fields show the scattered bag marks that are so often encountered on surviving examples of these earlier Liberty dates. 1816 1851'D' EF $1,800.00 Extremely Fine. Here is a reasonably high grade example of this Dahlonega date, showing a typically soft strike, with the faintest reverse rim bruise to be found at 7:00. Otherwise, this is a Branch Mint coin remarkably free of distracting marks. 1817 1853 AU $350.00 Extremely Fine, but lightly hairlined from an old cleaning; 1856 About Uncirculated. A lustrous example with a touch of coppery patina but lightly cleaned. 2 pieces. 1818 1853'C' CH AU $2,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This important Charlotte Mint coin boasts a very sharp strike, highlighted by ample surviving lustre and displaying a minimum of tiny contact marks. Here is a very high quality example of a date Akers described as ''generally available only in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition.'' 1819 1853'C' EF $1,400.00 Extremely Fine. A second example displaying trouble-free, generally moderate circulation with some marks of little visual importance. This would be a coin well suited for any date or Type collection. 1820 1853'D' VF $1,100.00 Very Fine. Date and 'D' mintmark are both boldly displayed on a coin showing normal circulation and an encouraging amount of overall detail to increase the coin's appeal. 1821 1856'O' F $800.00 Fine. This New Orleans coin saw its share of untroubled circulation, but its date and mintmark remain strong for generally pleasing effect. Akers called this one of his trio of New Orleans rarities, noting, ''I have seen relatively few of this date in any grade.'' 1822 1878'S' CH EF $375.00 Choice Extremely Fine. An example with at least half the original lustre but wiped at one time; 1880 Extremely Fine. A reasonable example, still showing much lustre, but lightly cleaned; 1881 Extremely Fine. A coin still showing significant lustre, but a bit washed out from cleaning. 3 pieces. 1823 1879 AU $350.00 Very Fine, though lightly polished; 1880 Extremely Fine details, but with scratches, lightly polished and ex jewelry; 1880'S' About Uncirculated details, but cleaned and with solder damage on the reverse. 3 pieces. 1824 1880 AU $380.00 About Uncirculated; 1881 About Uncirculated; 1884'S' About Uncirculated. A trio of nicely struck Liberty $5 gold coins, all with a minimum of bagmarks, bright but lightly cleaned. 3 pieces. 1825 1880 EF $390.00 Extremely Fine; 1882'S' Extremely Fine; 1901 Extremely Fine. A group of high grade circulated coins that still have a great deal of lustre, but were dipped at one time. 3 pieces. 1826 1880 CH EF $380.00 Choice Extremely Fine. A coin showing mild wear and a great deal of lustre. A superlative high-grade circulated example; 1886'S' Choice Extremely Fine. A lustrous example with evidence of brief circulation, but no damage; 1901'S' Extremely Fine, and attractive, but with almost imperceptible hairlines from an old cleaning. 3 pieces. 1827 1880 EF $370.00 Extremely Fine, with disturbances in the fields and a few rim nicks; lightly cleaned; 1903'S' Extremely Fine, acceptable, but with light hairlines from cleaning; 1905'S' Extremely Fine, and with a decent appearance, but cleaned. 3 pieces. 1828 1880'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $225.00 - and nearly Choice. An aesthetically pleasing piece showing shimmering lustre and a sharp strike. 1829 1880'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $180.00 A desirable coin that shows semi-prooflike fields and some frost showing on the devices. The piece is blemished only by some typical bagmarks and a few hairlines. 1830 1881 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $575.00 A desirable piece, though with some small marks consistent with the grade; nicely lustrous and well struck. 1831 1881 CH AU $280.00 About Uncirculated. An acceptable example with no major distracting marks and a great deal of lustre. The coin shows minor hairlines from an earlier cleaning; 1882 Choice About Uncirculated. This piece exhibits almost full lustre and a great strike. A few hairlines exist from a gentle wiping. 2 pieces. 1832 1881 AU $350.00 Very Fine, but burnished; 1882 About Uncirculated, but cleaned and lightly polished; 1886'S' Extremely Fine, with mild wear and some remaining lustre, but lightly cleaned. 3 pieces. 1833 1881 AU $375.00 About Uncirculated, and reasonably struck, but cleaned and lightly polished; 1882 About Uncirculated details, and cleaned. A long vertical scratch exists on the reverse; 1902'S' Extremely Fine. A rather decent and acceptable looking piece, but dipped. 3 pieces. 1834 1881 AU $385.00 About Uncirculated and with some frost surrounding the devices, but lightly dipped; 1886'S' About Uncirculated, but cleaned. Splashes of copper toning surround the stars and date; 1907 About Uncirculated, with most of the lustre remaining but dipped. 3 pieces. 1835 1882 AU $325.00 Extremely Fine, but damaged, with multiple pin scratches on both sides and polished surfaces; 1883 About Uncirculated details, but whizzed in the fields; 1893 About Uncirculated, but cleaned and lightly polished. 3 pieces.
