Brilliant Uncirculated BU $400.00 - virtually a Choice example. Frosty mint lustre is enhanced by an above average strike. Most of the shield lines and rays, though not entirely complete, offer definition that far surpasses the typical poor strike that plagues this type. 668 1867 With Rays. Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $50,000.00 A so-called original, the obverse die of which is perhaps most easily recognized by a thin die line that connects the second and third leaf at the top right corner of the shield. The '7' in the date also shows recutting. The reverse die is identical to that used to mint the restrikes, though restrikes were coined from later states of this die. The surfaces are just a bit rougher than the norm. 2 pieces. 670 1868 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $375.00 - there being only trivial microscopic specks visible with a glass. As is sometimes seen on Proofs of this issue, there is recutting evident on all of the digits in the date. Assertive legends and devices are bathed in liquid reflectivity. With the exception of an area of subtle tan toning at the right obverse, the surfaces are toned a pleasing pale lilac. 671 1869 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $300.00 This razor-sharp, fully mirrored example offers an enticing blush of delicate lilac-gray. The fields are quite smooth, and there is only trivial micro-speckling visible under magnification. 672 1870 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $650.00 Frosty design elements augment glassy fields. There is an ever so delicate blush of pale gold on either side. Well balanced and offering a particularly enticing reverse. 673 1872 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $750.00 - and just on the cusp of a full Gem designation. This meticulously struck jewel is embellished by a handsome shade of golden toning. The reverse is easily that of a glorious Gem. The obverse is equally as enticing were it not for some very inconspicuous microscopic specks. 674 1873 Open 3. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $750.00 Toned a delicate gold over satiny mint lustre. The design features are sharp, and the visual presentation is clearly better than the norm. 675 1874 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $600.00 - despite some trivial microscopic speckling visible only with a glass. The definition is chisel-sharp and the eye appeal of this pale golden specimen is outstanding. 676 1875 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $300.00 A shade of pleasant rose-golden toning is accented by mirrored fields and cameo devices. Only minor microscopic imperfections are detectable under scrutiny. 677 1876 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $300.00 - and approaching a Gem distinction. Here is a pale lavender example that is accented by wisps of russet on the obverse. The design features offer particularly deep cameo contrast against mirrored fields. Some very minor specks are mentioned for accuracy. 678 1877 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $2,400.00 - or better. The reverse could justifiably be called Gem, however the obverse reveals too many micro-specks to warrant such a grade. Pale russet-golden toning accompanies cameo devices and fully mirrored fields. The key date to the Shield Nickel series and always the object of intense collector demand. Most reference books list the mintage of this rare Proof-only issue at a mere 510+ pieces;...  more 679 1878 Brilliant Proof BR PF $800.00 - nearly a Choice example. Light speckling is largely concealed by a pale shade of russet-golden toning. Needle-sharp and still exhibiting a considerable degree of underlying reflectivity. Only 2,350 pieces were struck of this very scarce Proof-only issue. 680 1879 Brilliant Proof BR PF $280.00 - with claims to the Choice category. There is a small stain on the ball of the '5' on the reverse, as well as some other minor specks on either side. The definition is quite sharp, however the lustre is rather muted for a Proof. Only 3,200 Proofs and 25,900 business strikes were coined of this date. 681 1880 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $260.00 - and offering some characteristics that are indicative of a Gem classification. A wonderfully sharp strike is complemented by shimmering field reflectivity. The surfaces on either side display a blush of pleasing lilac that is accompanied by somewhat deeper shades of gray. A total of 3,955 Proofs and 16,000 business strikes comprise the mintage of this scarce date. 682 1881 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $240.00 - or thereabouts. A Gem but for some very inconspicuous micro-speckling on both the obverse and reverse. Watery mirrored fields and meticulously struck, frosted devices characterize this pale golden example. This uncommon date boasts a mintage of only 3,575 Proofs and 68,800 business strikes. 683 1882 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $160.00 - with claims to a Gem designation. Satin-reflectivity and bold definition are featured on this delicate lavender-golden specimen. A total of 3,100 pieces constitutes the Proof mintage of this date. 684 1883 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $240.00 - and approaching a Gem status. Toned a pale lavender-rose. Examination with a glass uncovers microscopic speckling on either side. The ''arm's length'' appeal of this assertive, well mirrored specimen, however, is undeniable. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $190.00 This satiny coin is quite similar in every respect to the prior lot. 687 1884 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $280.00 - with claims to the Gem category. Scattered microscopic surface flecks are accompanied by a blend of rose and golden toning. The fields enjoy lovely liquid-mirror allure. 688 1885 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $750.00 - despite some light speckling on either side. Sharp devices and mirrored fields are accented by a blush of golden-tan toning. Examples of this ''key'' issue are under intense collector pressure in today's strong market. 689 1886 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $325.00 - and enjoying shimmering mirrored fields complemented by sharp cameo design features. Light surface speckling is well concealed by delicate golden toning. Proofs of this date are worthy of a substantial premium in light of the extreme scarcity of high quality business strikes. 690 1887 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $170.00 - and toned a pleasant shade of liquid gold. A vibrant, assertive Gem were it not for some micro-speckling on either side. 691 1888 Brilliant Proof BR PF $170.00 - nearly a Choice example. Cameo devices and mirrored fields are ever so slightly muted by golden-gray toning. Minor staining is visible under scrutiny. 692 1889 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $150.00 Wisps of russet and golden toning partially conceal some tiny flecks on both the obverse and reverse. 693 1890 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $80.00 - and virtually of Choice quality. Velvet lustre is augmented by olive-golden peripheral iridescence. Some obverse micro-speckling is noted under magnification. 694 1891 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $80.00 - with claims to a Choice designation. Shades of olive-russet toning accompany satiny mint lustre. 695 1892 Brilliant Proof BR PF $150.00 - approaching a Choice distinction. This lavender-golden example offers razor-sharp design elements and nicely mirrored fields. Some tiny spots preclude a higher grade. 696 1893 Brilliant Proof BR PF $140.00 - and offering some characteristics indicative of a Choice classification.
