Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 380 1869 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $2,200.00 A lovely little coin with great color and mirror fields. The obverse is toned in rich coin silver gray shades while the back is bright with just a touch of pale russet around the rim. The centers on both sides are frosty white and highly attractive. The fields show deep reflectivity and pleasing flash. Would be a full Gem but for a few hairlines in the left obverse field. Only 600 Proofs...  more 381 1870 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $5,000.00 A lovely cameo Gem with great eye appeal. Both sides are bright in the centers with frosty details and a strong strike. The obverse is beautifully toned on the rim in deep iridescent blue and gold. The reverse is largely untoned. The fields show deep mirrors with full flash and great brilliance. Only 1,000 Proofs were struck. 382 1871 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $6,500.00 - and very near Gem quality. This piece is pale gold around the obverse rim, brighter white and frosty in the center. The reverse is a nice very pale golden brown around the rim with a bright frosty white center. The fields are deep mirrors with full flash showing. Some speckles on the obverse are all that keep this from Gem status. Only 960 Proofs were struck. 383 1872 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $15,000.00 A glittering little Gem of a coin with exceptional surface quality. The front is gloriously toned in an arc of deep iridescent blue around a white and frosty center. The reverse is essentially untoned save for a very faint wash of rich gold. The central devices and letters are all nicely frosty and the fields show deep mirrors on both sides. Only 950 Proofs were struck. 384 1873 No Arrows. Closed 3. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $7,500.00 Two-year only type. The obverse is toned in a rich combination of iridescent blue, rose, and gold over rich gray. The central device on this side is frosty and the fields on either side are bright mirrors. The back is mostly untoned except for a touch of blue at the upper right. Two parallel hairlines on the obverse are the only detriment requiring specific mention here. Only 540 Proofs...  more 385 1873 With Arrows. Open 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $400.00 Pale gold and iridescent blue toning over lightly cleaned surfaces. The strike is bold and there still remains some original lustre. 386 1874 Arrows. Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $3,750.00 Two-year only type. A typical two-tone Proof from this olde tyme collection. The obverse is a nice combination of iridescent blue around the rim wreathing a white and frosty center. The reverse is largely untoned, being bright white in the center with a touch of gold at the rim. The fields are deep mirrors and the strike is sharp. The piece is virtually Gem and has great eye appeal. Only...  more 387 1875 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $2,800.00 A nice example of the variety without arrows, the obverse being toned in a rich iridescent rainbow blue and rose, the reverse brighter with pale gold and brown around the rim. Full mint lustre can be seen on both sides. 388 1876 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $350.00 - or better in terms of visual appearance but closer inspection reveals signs of a deceptive cleaning. Rose-gold and electric blue toning over well struck surfaces. 389 1878 AU $80.00 About Uncirculated and nearly Mint State in terms of wear but previously cleaned and now retoned a deep ebony. 390 1879 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,600.00 A lovely example of this issue, one of only 1,100 Proofs struck. This piece is toned in rainbow hues around the obverse periphery with light gold near the center. The reverse is iridescent blue around the rim with a faintly golden wash in the center. The devices are frosty and appealing and the fields are fully mirror-like. Small spot in the right obverse field. 391 1880 Type 1 Reverse. Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $4,000.00 A lovely Gem specimen with nice toning and great eye appeal. The obverse is toned in pale gold and blue around the rim while the center is almost bright white and untoned. The reverse is rich gold and blue in places on the rim, elsewhere bright white. The central devices are frosty and the fields are deep mirrors with full flash. Only 1,355 Proofs were struck. The Type 1 reverse used on this...  more 392 1881 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $900.00 The front is toned in pale mauve in the fields, deeper purple and blue on the rim. Liberty's figure is frosty and the fields are deep mirrors. The reverse is nearly all bright white with frosty eagle and deep mirror brilliance. A lovely coin, one of only 975 Proofs struck. 393 1882 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $750.00 - approaching Gem quality. The obverse is mostly pale purple in the fields, deeper on the rim, while the central device is frosty and nearly white. The reverse is bright silver white in the center with deeper gold on the rim. The eagle is fully frosted and the fields on this side are also deep mirrors. Only 1,100 Proofs were struck. 394 1883 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $1,400.00 Another lovely two-tone Proof Quarter from this olde tyme collection. This piece is toned on the front in rainbow hues while the back is brighter white. The central devices are nicely frosty and the fields show deep mirror brilliance. Only 1,039 Proofs were struck. 395 1884 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $3,250.00 This is a very pleasing example, with rich pale purple and iridescent blue obverse toning, brighter white and pale gold on the back. The figures of Liberty and the eagle are both fully frosted and the field show deep mirror brilliance. Only 875 Proofs were struck. 396 1885 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $700.00 - near-Gem quality. The front is nicely toned in blue and gold while the back is untoned white. Full sharp lustre cartwheels can be seen on both sides. Low mintage issue, fewer than 14,000 business strikes were coined. 397 1886 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $2,200.00 - close to Gem quality. This pretty coin is toned on the front in iridescent blue and rose while the back is bright white in the center and pale gold on the rim. The central devices are frosty and the fields show deep mirror brilliance. The reverse is especially pleasing. Only 886 Proofs were struck. 398 1887 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,900.00 The obverse is deeply toned in rich russet and mauve and the reverse is a little lighter shade of the same color. The fields are deeply mirror brilliant and the central devices are fully frosted. The piece has very nice eye appeal and the coin is a noteworthy little gem. Only 710 Proofs were struck. 399 1888'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $160.00 Attractive iridescent blue surrounding deep gold in the centers on the obverse, the reverse is satiny and quite lustrous. Some light field marks but still quite nice. 400 1889 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,800.00 Another glittering Gem Quarter from this lovely old collection. The front of this piece is a gorgeous rich mauve with a touch of color on Liberty's head. The back is light gold on the rim, bright white in the center. The devices are nicely frosty and the fields show deep mirror brilliance. A small scuff in the left obverse field is noted. Only 711 Proofs were struck in this low business...  more 401 1890 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $3,250.00 Spectacular iridescent rainbow toning on the obverse contrasts with the light gold color on the back. Miss Liberty's figure on the front and the eagle's body on the back are both nicely frosted. The fields are deep mirrors and show full Proof flash. A few rather inconspicuous lines on the obverse are noted. Only 590 Proofs were struck. 402 1891 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $150.00 Deep gold and electric blue toning over surfaces that conceal some light hairlines.
