Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1173 1856 Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $6,500.00 Despite some very minor signs of contact in the right obverse field, this is a beautiful coin and a rare issue. The surfaces are toned with delicate but rich gold hues, deepening to iridescent blue through the denticles. The mirror fields are well preserved and display minimal hairlines. Much scarcer than dates in this grade a few years later, and always in fervent demand by date collectors....  more 1174 1856'O' WB.101. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. The Eliasberg Coin GEM BU $5,500.00 A classic Gem example of this date with tawny gold toning and lovely surfaces. The strike is sharp on the obverse, but a tad weak on the talon and thigh above of the eagle. Minor die crack slices through the upper two points of the first star. As with most of the Eliasberg silver coins, the surfaces are a delight for their original color and dancing lustre. PCGS MS65. 1175 1856'O' WB.104. Repunched '6'. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $8,000.00 A beautiful coin with an arc of iridescent blue and gold around much of the obverse, the reverse matching but with less intensity. Strong lustre in the fields, and sharply struck. The repunched '6' variant is clear with a magnifier, showing at the lower loop of that digit. Excellent surfaces define the grade and desirability. PCGS MS65. 1176 1856'O' WB.102. Repunched Date. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $400.00 Bright silver with abundant lustre and a hint of pinkish-gold over the surfaces. A few hairlines in the right obverse field limit the grade, but the strike is sharp and full throughout. The repunched date is dramatic, with the '1' and '6' showing the most evidence of repunching. After a few years of better quality control at the Philadelphia Mint (where dies for branch mints were engraved),...  more 1177 1856'S' WB.101 AU $1,400.00 A bold, strong About Uncirculated. Bright silver-gray with some lustre in the protected areas, and attractive for the grade. While lacking the silkiness of a Gem example, the present coin is a worthy example of this scarcer issue, with a mintage of 211,000 pieces, most of which entered hard service in the wild Gold Rush days of the West. 1178 1856'S' WB.101 AB EF $650.00 About Extremely Fine. The color was brightened at some time in the distant past, now light silver on the obverse, the reverse with gold and blue traces around the periphery. Sharply struck throughout, and still attractive. A decidedly scarce date with a mintage of 211,000 pieces. Most were lost or melted during the tumultuous years at the height of the California Gold Rush. 1179 1857 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $3,500.00 - and virtually a Gem. An outstanding example of this elusive early Proof issue. The surfaces are toned with dark gunmetal blue to gray, with lighter russet gold on the eagle, and iridescent, teal blue around the edges. Identifiable by a minute planchet flake located in the field by the inside point of the fifth star. The strike is sharp on most of Liberty, but a tad lacking on the eagle's...  more 1180 1857 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $4,000.00 - and just a whisper away from Gem. Deeply toned with russet and gunmetal blue throughout, with fiery iridescence when examined under a light. The surfaces are virtually free of hairlines or signs of handling. As noted 24 years ago when the present coin last appeared for sale, there is a minor curling lintmark in the left obverse field between stars two and three and Liberty's arm. Bright silver at the centers while the peripheries are toned with dark blue and gold from long storage in an album. Sharply struck by clashed dies and attractive. 1182 1857'O' WB.102. Errant Date in Rock. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $3,250.00 A solid coin that is light silver-gray with a trace of russet in the reverse fields. Sharply impressed save for Liberty's foot and the area opposite on the reverse, which shows minor striking softness. The errant date in the rock is clear with a magnifier with portions of the date punch peeking out from below Liberty's gown, others protruding from the rocky base, plus the '1' shows repunching...  more 1183 1857'O' WB.103. Repunched Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,200.00 - with claims to the Choice category. Gorgeous iridescent peripheral toning of blue and gold over strong lustre. The strike is full and complete, even on the talons of the eagle and thighs, areas that are generally poorly defined. Minor handling marks in the field are offset by the radiant nature of the surfaces. This is certainly one of the Finest Known to show this repunched date variant,...  more 1184 1857'S' WB.103. Medium Mintmark, Repunched '1'. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $11,000.00 - or essentially so. Although incorrectly attributed in the Pryor sale as a WB.102, this is clearly the repunched '1' variety with the two strong dots left of that digit. Considered a ''MS-65'' in that sale and not certified until after our consignor purchased it. The PCGS grade is decidedly conservative in our opinion, as the surfaces are wonderfully smooth despite microscopic wipe lines...  more 1185 1857'S' WB.101. Large 'S' EF $280.00 Extremely Fine or thereabouts as the surfaces were lightly cleaned long ago. Now a muted gray, about average for the given grade. Scarcer as a date with a mintage of 158,000 pieces. Three small digs are found above 'A' of HALF on the reverse, two connected by a scrape, and appear to be attempted punctures which scarcely entered the surface. 1186 1858 Brilliant Proof BR PF $800.00 - nearly Choice. Lightly cleaned long ago to remove toning which left small areas of the right obverse field slightly rough, a feature found on many early Proofs. Bright silver centers, with a darker frame of russet and blue through the denticles. Well mirrored devices and fields, the strike is quite sharp as compared with the 1857 Proof issues in this sale. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. This is an extraordinary example of this date repunching debacle. First off, the coin is a wonderful reflective Mint State, with blue and russet toning over steel-gray, prooflike surfaces. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $200.00 Attractive rose-gold, blue and russet iridescent toning on both sides and generally well struck. There are some minor hairlines in the right obverse field. Heavy die file lines are present below the right wing of the eagle. 1189 1858'S' WB.101. Large Mintmark. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $900.00 Although considered a WB.101 because of the large mintmark, there are traces of recutting at the base of Liberty's gown in three areas, including just right of the shield point. Pale orange-gold throughout and attractive for the grade. An interesting and potentially exciting discovery coin. 1190 1859 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $2,600.00 A borderline Gem with Cameo contrast. Totally white in color save for a hint of gold around the reverse denticles. Boldly and completely struck and carefully preserved for an early Proof issue. The eye appeal is strong for this date. Slight repunching is found left of the serif of the '1' in the date. 1191 1859'O' WB.101. Normal Date. Superb Gem Brilliant Uncirculated SUP GEM BU $29,000.00 This coin is simply amazing. The surfaces approach perfection in every way, the striking detail is nearly perfect, and the lustre is undisturbed. Not only is this the finest 1859'O' graded by the two major grading services, it is the only New Orleans No Motto Half Dollar to be graded this high by PCGS. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $5,500.00 Rich light yellow-gold toning starting to form over dancing lustre. A coin with abundant cartwheel mint bloom. The strike is fairly sharp with a trace of weakness on Liberty's head and a couple of stars, bold over the entire reverse. Although a common date, quality at this level is always in fervent demand, particularly so for any New Orleans issue. A prize for the specialist. 1193 1859'O' WB.103. Errant 9 in Rock CH AU $300.00 Choice About Uncirculated and sharply struck. Muted silver-gray with some lustre remaining in the protected areas. The surfaces are pleasing although a thin scratch is located in the field to the left of the eagle's wing. This is the scarcest die pairing reported by Wiley-Bugert for the year and mint. A solid collector coin with the repunched '9' clearly visible dangling out of the rocky...  more 1194 1859'S' WB.102. Medium Mintmark. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $4,750.00 A frosty white coin with abundant lustre and outstanding surfaces. If one must find fault, there are some trivial and faint hairlines in the right obverse field, but these are more than offset by the eye appeal. Starting to tone with a hint of peripheral gold and faint streaks of gray on the upper obverse. 1195 1860 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $2,400.00 - and on the cusp of a Gem grade. Toned with rich russet-gold on both sides, with the mirror fields well preserved. Starting to tone with hints of iridescent blue at the rims. Strong eye appeal for the surface quality and toning. One of just 1,000 struck in Proof. 1196 1860 AU $350.00 A strong About Uncirculated, but there are some moderate hairlines in the fields. Bright silver from a past cleaning, but boldly struck and a coin that should tone down if given the chance. 1197 1860'O' WB.105. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,100.00 - with claims to a Gem status. The fields are wholly prooflike and reflective, unlike the typical circulation strike. Perhaps this is a Presentation striking of some sort. The mintmark is slightly repunched on the upper left inside portion. The stripes within the shield are not reflective, but all other portions of the field are mirror-like. Identifiable by a short lintmark that curls...  more 1198 1860'O' WB.104. ''Eagle Laying Egg'' Variety. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $425.00 Muted gold and russet over the entire coin, with traces of blue intermixed. The surfaces are attractive and free of distracting hairlines or nicks. Identifiable by a tiny rectangular shaped planchet flaw nearly touching the lower left point of the first star. This variety was so named by noted specialist Charlton Meyer as the 'O' mintmark is very high, and in fact touches the branch above,...  more 1199 1860'S' WB.101. Large Mintmark CH AU $550.00 Choice About Uncirculated. The mintmark nearly touches the branch with its serif. Traces of lustre remain and the surfaces are attractive, with no distracting cuts or scratches. Another solid collector coin for the grade. 1200 1861 Brilliant Proof BR PF $675.00 - the reverse is approaching the Choice category. Bright and untoned save for a hint of color starting to form within the reverse fields. Moderate hairlines from a past wiping account for the grade, heavier on the obverse than the reverse. Still eye appealing and one of a total 1,000 coined in Proof format this year. 1201 1861'O' Brilliant Proof BR PF $15,000.00 - and essentially of Choice quality. One of just 5 or 6 known according to Walter Breen. The color is bright silver, with just a hint of pale gold starting to form over the surfaces. Outstanding quality for the collector who appreciates history, rarity and importance. A few faint hairlines are present, and a small scuff in the field between the back of Liberty's head and the upper part...  more 1202 1861'O' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,500.00 Bright and lustrous for this date, with a dark ring of iridescent green, gold and blue around the obverse, more russet near the reverse rim.
