Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1764 1850 AU $3,000.00 About Uncirculated, or finer. Orange-gold lustre glows in and around the protected areas of the devices, while the gently worn fields and high points are a lovely olive-gold hue. Here is a crisply struck, high grade survivor of a date that is popularly collected as the first Double Eagle issue. 1765 1852'O' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $10,000.00 Very well struck with nice surfaces. The lustre is quite good and the color is a pale yellow-gold. There are a few obverse hairlines but this coin is quite attractive and has the initial look of a Choice or better example. A very rare coin in this condition and a specimen that is sure to elicit strong bidding interest. 1766 1854'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,800.00 Well struck with nice lustre. The reverse is fully Choice with marvelous appeal. The obverse has sustained multiple pinpricks and some abrasion on the cheek and to the left of the date. The look reminds one of a coin that has been sea-salvaged, which might explain this coin's surface quality. 1767 1855'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,100.00 - or nearly so. A very lustrous example that has a light amount of abrasion in the fields, otherwise this coin is quite attractive and has a very strong strike. 1768 1865 CH AU $2,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Deep golden toning. The strike is decent and the lustre is quite attractive. A coin that is very close to full Mint State but has too much field abrasion to be designated as such. 1769 1866'S' With Motto CH AU $7,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the cusp of full Mint State. Lovely red-gold surfaces are nearly mark-free and reflect a radiant glow of quality. Akers calls this ''one of the rarest S-mint issues...almost all known examples are VF and EF... a full AU is definitely rare.'' NGC AU58. 1770 1867'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $16,000.00 - or perceptibly finer. Magnificently smooth lustrous surfaces display absolutely minimal marks and this handsome coin literally radiates quality. Akers' assertion that this San Francisco date ''is nearly impossible to locate better than EF'' is validated by the 10-year Dannreuther-Garrett auction record. This chronicles 49 appearances of the 1867'S', with only four in Mint State, and...  more 1771 1868'S' CH AU $3,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated, only a whisper away from full Mint State and yet an unusually high grade for a date generally found in the VF range. Lustre is full and wear is wholly unobtrusive though both sides show a sprinkling of bagmarks and a hint of deeper color in the fields. NGC AU58. 1772 1869'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $7,250.00 - or finer. Lovely yellow-gold lustre imparts an impressive glow, some typical scattered marks can be seen. Akers considers this San Francisco date a significant rarity in Mint State, and while Dannreuther-Garrett record 48 appearances at auction in a decade, only 14 were Mint State, and none finer than this richly lustrous example. NGC MS61. 1773 1871'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,250.00 - or a trifle better. This extraordinary coin's fields exhibit virtually prooflike reflectivity along with a complement of bagmarks. Devices are splendidly detailed and relatively free of bagging for added beauty. Overall, this Type II Liberty Head Double Eagle must be called visually impressive. PCGS MS61. 1774 1872'CC' CH AU $7,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated, not too distant from Mint State in strict terms of wear. Minimal circulation, a number of obverse bagmarks describe this lustrous Carson City coin. This Double Eagle's high grade level gives it a prominent place among the 78 examples recorded in the 10-year Dannreuther-Garrett auction record, most of which represent significantly lower grades. NGC AU55. 1775 1872'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,000.00 - or finer. Deep yellow lustre is dark on the highest points as a result of bag storage long ago and the fields display a scattering of light marks. While 32 examples are listed by Dannreuther-Garrett, only six are equal to this high-grade example. NGC MS61. 1776 1872'S' AU $1,000.00 About Uncirculated, nearly Choice. Glowing, rich orange and red mint frost rings the devices and legends on this specimen of an issue that is nearly unobtainable in full Mint State. 1777 1873 Open 3. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $8,000.00 Delicate gold mint frost saturates both sides of this splendidly struck example. The obverse shows one or two marks but the overall visual quality is of the highest with an especially lustrous reverse adding to the coin's inarguable beauty. While many dozens of lesser-grade examples are listed by Dannreuther-Garrett, only 10 examples appear in this or higher grade. PCGS MS63. 1778 1873'CC' CH AU $8,250.00 Choice About Uncirculated. This forcefully struck, boldly flashing coin shows a wisp of uncomplicated wear with substantial lustre concentrating around the well detailed reliefs. Marks are few, increasing this Carson City's coins excellent visual quality. NGC AU55. 1779 1873'S' Closed 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,300.00 - or better. Deeply lustrous red-gold surfaces display cartwheel flash with a scattering of obverse bagmarks. Reverse is essentially in the Choice category. NGC MS61. 1780 1873'S' Closed 3. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,300.00 - or finer. A pleasing example of this date and variety showing a somewhat more subdued lustre, bag abrasion in the obverse left field. NGC MS61. 1781 1873'S' Closed 3 AU $950.00 About Uncirculated. A very lightly worn example. Although superbly struck and bagmark-free, both obverse and reverse surfaces have been gently cleaned. 1782 1874'CC' CH AU $2,300.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Handsome red-gold lustre intensifies around the sharply defined reliefs, wear is unobtrusive and free of any special problems. NGC AU55. 1783 1874'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,850.00 - or finer. Liberty's face is free of marks, standing out boldly from yellow-gold fields bearing scattered tics of minor visual importance. Only 36 examples appear in the 10-year Dannreuther-Garrett listing, only six in grades higher than this. PCGS MS61. 1784 1875'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,200.00 - or a shade better. Splendid gold lustre imparts a delightful cartwheel gleam to this thoroughly desirable example of a scarce San Francisco date. NGC MS61. 1785 1876 CH AU $450.00 Choice About Uncirculated, a whisper from full Mint State. Forceful cartwheel gleam enriches both sides of this Centennial year strike, which bears some widely distributed field marks offering limited visual distraction. NGC AU58. 1786 1876 CH AU $650.00 Choice About Uncirculated and very close to full Mint State. Frosty surfaces exude yellow-gold toning. Moderate bag abrasion and a shallow pinscratch above the head. Still a decent example of this Type II Double Eagle. 1787 1876'S' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $9,000.00 A fascinating Centennial year coin displaying rich and full cartwheel lustre, a few minute tics are noted for accuracy. A substantial number of lesser quality examples are listed by Dannreuther and Garrett, but only two in higher grade than this beautiful gold coin. PCGS MS63. 1788 1876'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,700.00 - and near-Choice. A second high quality example that appears to be only a bagmark or two from higher grade. This is nonetheless a very pleasing, high quality coin of undoubted beauty and scarcity. PCGS MS62. 1789 1877'CC' CH AU $6,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, only a mark or two from a higher grade. This coin's forceful lustre borders on the prooflike, accentuating a strike of exceptional boldness. The obverse displays a number of bagmarks with a small toning spot visible at 12:00. NGC AU58. 1790 1877'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,300.00 - and near-Choice. Fully lustrous with some obverse field abrasions and a suggestion of shadowy striae. The reverse is essentially Choice with minimal marks. PCGS MS62. 1791 1878 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 Attractive rose gold surfaces adorn this lightly bagmarked example. NGC MS61. 1792 1878 EF $412.00 Extremely Fine. Problem-free circulation, partial lustre and a few insignificant marks define this pleasing example. 1793 1878'CC' CH AU $9,750.00 Choice About Uncirculated, on the threshold of full Mint State. Flashing lustre approaches prooflike in its bold reflectivity, a few light marks can be found with a glass.
