1916 Very Choice Matte Proof, on the threshold of full Gem. Deep brown surfaces are faintly edged in faded red. This was the final Proof date before America's entry into the First World War, and Breen called it ''very rare and seldom offered.'' With only 1,050 Proofs struck, this date has long been recognized as rare in the highest grades.
