1867 Breen 5478. Repunched 186. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. According to the late Walter Breen, this obverse die was first punched with the smaller date logotype intended for Half Dollars. The larger Dollar logotype was then punched over the first impression. The final date shows a short '1' under the definitive digit, fragments of smaller '8' and '6' under the final digits. Fully reflective silver mint lustre adds distinction to an exacting strike. Adding the scarcity of this exciting date variety to the high grade produces a coin of exceptional multi-dimensional appeal. The NGC Census does not distinguish this variety and shows only three assigned this grade, NGC MS63.
