 1840 Brilliant Uncirculated or finer. Here is an extraordinary example of a highly desirable early date of the then-new Christian Gobrecht Liberty design. This pleasing coin is boldly struck, wholly lustrous and free of serious marks. Struck well before the real launching of numismatics in the United States, this date is scarcely to be found today in the higher grades. While 66 pieces appeared at auction over the decade covered by Dannreuther and Garrett, 50 of them were in lower grades.
