Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1950 1795 Breen 1-A (R-5). Wide Date, 3 Berries EF $16,000.00 Extremely Fine. Uniform wear, yellow-gold surfaces exhibit a trace of faint red. Some hairlines are seen, mostly in the upper left reverse field. This reverse is particularly distinctive, showing three berries and leaves merging with both 'U' and 'N' of UNITED. 1951 1795 Br.1-B (R-5). 15 Stars, Crowded Y. AU $12,500.00 About Uncirculated and a strong representative of this distinctly high grade. The 'Y' of LIBERTY is joined to star 11, which in turn heavily touches star 12. Reverse wreath bears four berries. The truncation of Liberty's bust bears an interesting countermark-like crescent suggesting a new moon. The reverse rim bears faint bruises at 9:00 and 11:00. Capped Bust Right, Large Eagle Reverse Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1952 1798 Br.1-B (R-4+). Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU $9,000.00 About Uncirculated. An advanced crack curves along the base of the date, fine die cracks link the eagle's head and lower shield to the rim. Deep yellow gold fields show some faint hairlines and a mark or two can be found with a glass. Nevertheless, the overall quality of this remarkable coin must be called outstanding. 1953 1800 Br.1-C. (High R-5). 'M' over 'M' AU $4,800.00 About Uncirculated and near-Choice. This distinctive variety shows the date spaced '1 800'. The reverse shows the definitive 'M' in AMERICA punched over a larger 'M.' This coin exhibits lightest circulation and boasts a very even strike. Smooth surfaces display pleasing clear rose intensifying around the reliefs. This coin is free of notable marks excepting, perhaps, two tiny pecks after OF....  more 1954 1803/2 Br.2-D (R-4). 1 Touches Curl, TE Touch at Base CH AU $7,500.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Splendid color combines with a meticulous strike to convey the visual appeal of a higher grade. The date shows an advanced die crack at the base, 'T' in UNITED is boldly recut and its base touches the 'E.' Here is an exceptionally appealing example of an important overdate in wholly satisfying preservation. 1955 1807 Br.4-C (High R-4). Incomplete Lower Curl, Recut 1. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $8,500.00 - or somewhat finer. Successive lapping of the obverse die causes detachment or disappearance of the lowest lock's of Liberty's long tresses. The reverse shows a well-defined die crack from base of 'N' in UNITED to the arrows and on to the side of the shield. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $3,500.00 Greenish-gold toning over well struck surfaces. The reverse shows some light adjustment marks at the upper left rim and the obverse has a circular pinscratch that encompasses nearly the entire inside of the rim. Nonetheless, the coin retains a decent appearance. 1957 1808 Br.4-A (R-5). Normal Date, Close 5D. CH AU $6,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated. '1' in date is high, leaning left, star 13 is close to the curl. Deep yellow gold surfaces show little actual wear but crisply defined die clash is evident on both sides, especially bold on the reverse. A lovely example of this desirable date and variety, partly lustrous with some tiny marks and free of the die rust that is sometimes observed. The circulation shown is the lightest and the overall visual appeal is very high despite a past gentle cleaning that is most visible on the obverse. Liberty Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1959 1839'D' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $10,500.00 - nearly Choice. Pale greenish-gold toning over decent surfaces. Some light tics are found under magnification but none qualify as serious. A very rare date with only 18,939 pieces struck. Very few could match the overall appeal of the present example. 1960 1840 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,500.00 - or finer. Here is an extraordinary example of a highly desirable early date of the then-new Christian Gobrecht Liberty design. This pleasing coin is boldly struck, wholly lustrous and free of serious marks. Struck well before the real launching of numismatics in the United States, this date is scarcely to be found today in the higher grades. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $500.00 - in strict terms of wear, but surfaces exhibit a distinct appearance which is often the result of long immersion in salt water. Here is a well struck survivor of this No Motto issue. 1962 1847 CH AU $280.00 Choice About Uncirculated. Greenish-gold toning over nicely struck surfaces. The lustre is attractive and the fields are nearly mark-free and above average for the grade. The top of the '7' shows some slight repunching. 1963 1847'C' EF $1,800.00 Extremely Fine. Green-gold toning over surfaces that show some moderate field abrasion. The strike is adequate and the coin exhibits some underlying lustre. A scarce and popular date that was struck at this heavily collected southern mint. 1964 1850 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,500.00 Splendid greenish-gold toning over well preserved surfaces. The strike is decent but for the date area and the eagle's neck, which are both a trifle weak. A very nice example of a No Motto Half Eagle that is sure to please most collectors. 1965 1850'C' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,000.00 The surfaces have the look of being subjected to a immersion in saltwater for an extended time. The toning is greenish-gold and the strike is strong including the mintmark, which is unusual. Here is a very pleasing example of this southern mint product. 1966 1856'D' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,900.00 Here is a coin toned in orange-gold with richer red tones in the fields that are aglow with gentle mint lustre. Sharply struck peripheries contrast boldly with very weakly struck forelocks on the obverse and weakly defined legs on the eagle. Remarkably mark-free, the fields however are a trifle grainy. A decent example of this very scarce coin with only 19,786 pieces struck. 1967 1863'S' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $13,000.00 Light toning over gently reflective surfaces. A decent strike adds to the allure of this very rare date of which only 17,000 pieces were produced and that is perceptibly rarer than this mintage would indicate. A few insignificant bagmarks can be found under magnification. This date comes up for sale only when a significant collection of Half Eagles comes under the auctioneer's gavel....  more 1968 1877 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,700.00 - and fully prooflike, which magnifies the small bagmarks that this coin possesses. This example is quite lustrous and well struck. From a minuscule mintage of only 1,152 pieces including Proofs, one can see how difficult it must be to find coins of this quality in today's market. 1969 1881 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $2,600.00 Bold mint frost joins orange-gold and rose toning on this superior grade Liberty Head Half Eagle. Although very commonly available in the lower Mint State grades, fresh, mark-free specimens like this are much more difficult to locate. NGC MS65. 1970 1883 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $390.00 - or virtually so. Lustrous and toned in beautiful rose and gold hues. Scarce. 1971 1899 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $2,200.00 Frosty cartwheel lustre covers both sides of this appealing virtual Gem, a coin of surprisingly delicate beauty. 1972 1900 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $300.00 - and virtually fully Choice. Lovely glowing yellow-gold lustre provides vivacity to a superior strike on this final date of the 19th century. 1973 1905 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $650.00 - virtually Choice. Half Eagles ($5.00 Gold) → U. S. Indian Head Half Eagles Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1974 1909'O' CH AU $4,800.00 Choice About Uncirculated. The New Orleans mintmark is distinct on the reverse of this largely mark-free example of the only Indian date of this Southern Branch Mint. Wear is minimal and only a couple of lines can be found on the reverse field. Here is a thoroughly satisfying candidate for some carefully chosen collection. 1975 1914 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $305.00 - with claims to Choice. Handsome canary-yellow lustre covers the boldly struck devices as well as the remarkably smooth fields for bold visual effect. 1976 1915 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $480.00 Here is an original, frosty orange-gold specimen featuring hints of copper-salmon toning in the crevices of the devices.
