1863 Choice Brilliant Proof. A pleasing example of this war-time issue, one of only 460 Proofs struck. One wonders what the Mint was thinking making Proof coins for sale while the nation was engaged in a bitter struggle for its very survival. The piece is beautifully toned in rich golden brown around the rims while the centers are bright and untoned. Liberty's figure is pleasantly frosty. The fields on both sides are bright full mirrors with complete Proof flash. There are hairlines under the toning that keep this from a higher grade.
