1867 over Smaller Date. Brilliant Uncirculated or essentially so, however there are some very faint hairlines that are detectable in the obverse field. This remarkable overdate shows very clear remnants of a smaller '186' slanting downwards to the right beneath the date. According to Breen, the date was first entered with a Half Dollar logotype and then corrected. The tops of a '186' are visible above the primary numerals. The left base of the smaller '1' is evident to the left of the upright of the larger '1', and remnants of a smaller '8' are detectable inside the bottom loop of the larger '8'.
The coin retains evenly toned shades of lavender-gray and subtle gold on either side. A very rare overdate that is more frequently encountered as a Proof rather than a business strike. Both Breen and Bowers-Borckardt mention only two business strike pieces with which they were aware, although the population certainly is greater than that number. Dannreuther-Garrett lists only five business strike auction appearances of this highly important variety in their reference covering the years 1995 through 2004!
