1805/4 O.103b (High R-5) About Fine, but lightly cleaned. This is the latest die state seen and a fairly high grade coin for this popular die state. There is no definition within the triangular die cud covering the first star and all but the two upper points of the second star. Some experts consider this to be a retained cud with enough wear to eliminate the weakly struck definition of the stars within this raised section. A die crack continues from the point of the triangle up through Liberty's curls, face and nose and extends to the rim through the 'Y' and inner point of star eight. Steel gray with colorful accents around the periphery and reasonably attractive.
The strike is shallow as expected, particularly on the edges and legend. Strong die clashing above and below the eagle on the right side, and die cracks are seen connecting several reverse letters. Both sides show parallel hairlines from a past cleaning and there is a minor pin scratch through the final 'A' of AMERICA crossing the branch to the middle of the right wing of the eagle. One of the most dramatic die failures of the entire series and long popular with specialists who enjoy die progressions.
