1837 Valentine 1. Peaked 1, Repunched Date. Brilliant Uncirculated, with claims to Choice. Boldly struck throughout and exhibiting some reflectivity in the fields. In the past this coin has been sold as a Proof and it may well be, as Proofs are known from this die pair, and this is a very early die state with dramatic and sharp repunching on all digits of the date, with the '8' recut 3 times. Die file lines seen on Proofs are present and extend from the dentils above 'STA' of STATES. Both the obverse and reverse show a partial fin or wire rim. Toned a light golden-gray throughout, with a few minor hairlines from a past cleaning limiting the grade and slightly obscuring the delicate mirror fields. The present coin was examined by the late Walter Breen and he believed it was a Proof according to the description in its prior auction appearance. Regardless of the striking methodology, this is a very pleasing coin that boasts good eye appeal.
