Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 1662 1797 Logan-McCloskey 2 (R-4) VG $1,500.00 Very Good. The coin is evenly toned with golden-silver hues throughout. A few minor nicks are present on Liberty's bust and another behind her mouth, not unexpected for the grade. A later die state with a heavy die crack through the 'E' of UNITED. An absolutely stunning example of this scarce die pairing, the surfaces are draped in speckled orange-russet toning with attractive teal accents near the rims. The fields are perfectly mirrored and the devices show evidence of frost. In our May 1998 sale we considered this coin a Proof, and it certainly has the diagnostics of a Proof. Furthermore,...  more 1664 1832 LM.12. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $3,500.00 Diamond-sharp stars and legend reflect a meticulous strike including the filled lower loop in the '8.' Smooth silver centers are haloed by broad bands of gold that deepen perceptibly at the high rims. NGC MS65. 1665 1834 LM.4. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,000.00 - with claims to Gem, and Prooflike. This coin was considered a Proof in our 1997 sale and it may well be a Proof. The fields are fully reflective while all the devices and lettering show the expected satiny frost. A considerable number of Proofs are known from this pair of dies, and the present coin is the earliest die state seen, lacking the later bisecting die crack on the obverse,...  more 1666 1836 LM.1.1 (High R-6). Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $1,600.00  Deeply toned with fiery russet and blue throughout, and quite attractive. The fields are fully reflective and this coin has been sold in the past as Proof, which it certainly has claims to be. Walter Breen notes that at least seven examples were known in Proof when he published his Proof Encyclopedia in 1977 and all he had seen were of this early die state. Superb Gem Brilliant Uncirculated SUP GEM BU $3,200.00 A needle-sharp strike is displayed by a full head, toe, shield and all other devices. Vibrant royal blue toning encircles either side of the coin, accentuating the pale silver centers for a glorious look. The surfaces are pristine and free of any distractions. Silky mint bloom radiates from this stunning example. A magnificent example that is surely among the finest of surviving specimens. 1668 1837 Valentine 1. Peaked 1, Repunched Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $650.00 - with claims to Choice. Boldly struck throughout and exhibiting some reflectivity in the fields. In the past this coin has been sold as a Proof and it may well be, as Proofs are known from this die pair, and this is a very early die state with dramatic and sharp repunching on all digits of the date, with the '8' recut 3 times. Advanced wear on the reverse from a dished planchet; 1856 About Uncirculated. Lustrous, with removable green deposits. 8 pieces. 1670 1840'O' No Drapery. Small round 'O' mintmark. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 Frosty lustre is accented by a blush of overlying pale gold. There are a few tiny obverse lines and reverse contact marks that do not significantly impede the overall appearance of this elusive coin. 1671 1840 V.7. With Drapery. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $4,000.00 There was only one die pair to strike all the With Drapery coins from the Philadelphia Mint according to Blythe. Although we do not want to definitively call this coin a Proof, it clearly has many Proof characteristics and undoubtedly is an early strike from these dies. In fact, we would certainly call this boldly struck example Choice were it not for some barely visible lines that can only be viewed under close scrutiny. Full mint frost is accented by a delicate blush of golden toning. Quite scarce in this condition. 1673 1850'O' CH EF $220.00 Very Fine; 1853 Arrows. Extremely Fine. Old reverse scratches; 1853'O' Arrows. Choice Very Fine; 1854 Arrows. Choice Extremely Fine. Lustrous; 1856 Choice Extremely Fine; 1857 Extremely Fine. 6 pieces. 1674 1851 CH AU $200.00 Choice About Uncirculated or better. Toned a pleasant medium golden-gray; 1859 Brilliant Uncirculated. Faint obverse hairlines beneath light mauve-gray and iridescent toning; 1869'S' Brilliant Uncirculated. Faint hairlines on either side. The peripheries display russet toning. 3 pieces. 1675 1851'O' Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $325.00 - or thereabouts and toned a wispy gold over frosty mint lustre. The strike, though not entirely full, is even and well balanced. As is the case with many New Orleans Mint issues of this denomination, this date is quite scarce within the condition range offered here. 1676 1853'O' No Arrows. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $4,500.00 There is an even shade of rich olive-mauve toning that bathes either side. The underlying legends and design features are evenly struck, and the surfaces are free of any particularly distracting imperfections. A very rare and highly important date in this condition, there being perhaps a dozen or so full Mint State survivors. Choice Extremely Fine; 1854'O' Arrows. Choice Extremely Fine. Slight warp in the planchet; 1855 Arrows. Choice Extremely Fine; 1856 About Uncirculated. Here is a nice, original group of coins that are lightly lustrous below deep silver-gray and olive toning. 6 pieces. 1678 1853 Arrows, 1853'O' Arrows, 1854 Arrows, 1855'O' Arrows, 1856 CH EF $220.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Light lustre glows below olive-gray and silver toning. The 1854 Arrows is mostly untoned, the 1856 is essentially About Uncirculated. 5 pieces. 1679 1854 Arrows, 1858'O', 1861 CH AU $200.00 Choice About Uncirculated, About Uncirculated, and Choice About Uncirculated respectively. All are frosty and exhibit little or no toning. The second coin displays a light mark or two in the right obverse field. 3 pieces. 1680 1860 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $350.00 Delicate iridescent blue shares the smooth frosty surfaces with peripheral bands of understated rose-gold for remarkable beauty and bold appeal. 1681 1860'O' AU $60.00 About Uncirculated. Flashy bright silver with signs of a past cleaning. Tawny iridescent toning forming at the edges on the reverse. 1682 1861 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $375.00 Subtle rose laves smoothly lustrous silver. Dashes of russet add their richness to this Civil War date's overall colorful visual quality. 1683 1862 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $350.00 This needle-sharp, unencumbered specimen is awash in a blend of aqua-blue, pale green, and golden iridescence on either side. Underlying mint frost completes the compelling presentation. 1684 1863 Repunched 18. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $455.00 Faint hairlines from a past cleaning are detectable on either side. The definition is sharp, and the surfaces are accented by a blush of pale russet-golden toning. High grade business strikes of this very scarce issue are much more difficult to acquire than their Proof brethren. Only 18,000 business strikes and 470 Proofs were coined of this date. 1685 1865'S' Repunched Date. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $850.00 - or nearly so. The base of the '1' and '8' in the date show evidence of doubling, as does the outer right curve of the top loop and inner curve of the bottom loop of the '8'. Well struck. There is a deep shade of olive-gray toning on both the obverse and reverse. The underlying surfaces exhibit muted mint frost. A very scarce date in this condition regardless of the die variety. This...  more 1686 1872'S' Br.3136. Blundered Obverse, 'S' below Bow CH AU $100.00 Choice About Uncirculated and only a whisper from unquestioned Mint State. This date is boldly triple-punched with a fourth starkly visible impression high in the field above the final digits.
