1802/1 Breen 4 (R-4). 13 Star Reverse. Very Choice to Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. Here is a jewel-like Gold coin of the earliest U.S. design, enriched by lustre of a quality virtually unknown. Strike is exceptionally full with only a trace of adjustment marks on the obverse. Stars are arranged 8x5, the tiny '2' shows traces of an underlying '1' of unusual clarity. Reverse shows 13 stars over the eagle in an arc pattern, a leaf is firmly joined to the base of 'I'. No example of this elusive date appeared in the Eliasberg collection. While three Very Choice examples are listed by Garrett and Dannreuther, no coin appeared in a higher grade in 10 years of auction coverage. Here is an awe-inspiring example that may well be the finest known of its variety if not its date.
