Autographed Check on the Bank of Alexandria, 1799, signed by George Washington. First President of the United States. A check for $158.82 drawn on the Bank of Alexandria dated 18th of February, 1799. These were bearer checks and could be endorsed to further payees. A desirable check written in the early part of the year of Washington's death. The Bank of Alexandria was one of the earliest incorporated banks in the fledgling United States and Washington was likely a shareholder. The check is well accomplished in Washington's hand and his signature is bold and clear. There is a light ink miscue above the loop of the 'h'. The check is hammer cut cancelled in two places away from the signature with foxing at the left end and a quarter inch tear at the right. There are three small stains from the mounting glue at the top. The overall eye appeal from the face is quite sharp. Mounted with glue to a presentation board, the upper right corner is torn and the remnant is on the board.
