Brilliant Uncirculated BU $450.00 The appearance is that of a Choice coin at first glance, but a magnifier will discern subtle hairlines from a past wiping with a cloth and gentle cleaning. Retoning with traces of gold with flecks of red, green and russet intermixed near the rims. 1062 1826 O.110. Superb Gem Brilliant Uncirculated SUP GEM BU $15,000.00 Completely snow-white on both obverse and reverse, without a hint of toning. The lustre is radiant in the fields and dominates the surfaces. This is a middle die state with faint clashmarks present on the obverse and reverse, and evidence of die rust is present over Liberty and the surrounding fields. Liberty's curls are quite sharp, including the finer hair strands so often lacking on these early Capped Bust Halves, but the stars lack their radial centers. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $5,500.00 a Specimen Strike. Called a Specimen Strike in our sale in 1998 and a Proof in a prior appearance in 1957. Examination by any knowledgeable numismatist will confirm that the fabric and texture of the present coin is quite different from the usual circulation strike. The fields are reflective beneath the toning. Clearly this coin was made as a specimen and was not intended for circulation....  more 1068 1827 O.146. Curled Base 2. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 - or better. Silver-gray with a dusting of peripheral gold on both sides over lustre. The strike is typically soft on the stars and curls of Liberty, and the eagle's claws and branch lack the finer definition. The surfaces show minor hairlines and handling marks, all microscopic in nature. This is the only Half Dollar obverse die used in 1827 that employed the Curled Base on the 2. Frosty lustre throughout and attractive for the silver centers and dark gold, blue and russet peripheral toning. The surfaces are pleasing as they have minimal signs of handling and no rim problems. One minor edge ding above the 'E' of UNITED. Early die state and wonderful eye appeal for the grade. 1071 1828 O.118 (Rarity-8 as Proof). Square Base, Knob 2, Small 8's. Brilliant Proof BR PF $5,700.00 Here is another extremely rare coin which stands on its own credentials. Breen mentions this specimen in his Proof Encyclopedia although he states that it is ''unverified'' as he did not have the opportunity to examine it. The fields and devices are those of a Proof with highly reflective mirror fields and well frosted devices. The coiner didn't complete the field polishing between the eagle's neck...  more 1072 1829/7 O.101. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $2,200.00 A frosty white coin save for a dusting of blue and gold near the edge and good eye appeal for the grade. There are some minor hairline scratches in the left obverse, but they are faint and blend well with the lustrous field. Fairly well struck although a couple of stars lack their radials. The edge lettering is blundered, portions are tripled, others doubled, and quite interesting to...  more 1073 1829 O.117. Small Letters. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $180.00 - but gently cleaned. Light silver in color, with a few flecks of gold near the rims. Sharply struck on Liberty's curls and stars, although the first couple of stars lack their complete centers. No other surface problems are apparent on this decent example of the variety. 1074 1830 O.102. (R-3) CH AU $425.00 Choice About Uncirculated and just on the cusp of Brilliant Uncirculated. Generally bright silver with a couple of tiny flecks of dark gold near the rims. Sharply impressed, with a whisper of wear on the uppermost curls and the eagle's talons and brow. A slightly scarcer variety that shows a repunched '8' in the date and spurs extending off to the right of the eagle's chest. 1075 1830 O.117 (Rarity-8 as Proof). Small 0. Choice Brilliant Proof CH BR PF $15,000.00 A splendid coin that retains classic steel gray fields with frosty white devices. The strike is medallic in nature, quite unlike the usual Capped Bust Half Dollar struck for circulation. Place this one in a coin case at any show and watch the reactions. Expect ''Is the Gallery Mint up to 1830?'' from passers by. The dies were clearly frosted and then the fields polished before this coin was struck....  more 1076 1830 O.117. Small 0. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $3,750.00 Attractively toned with deep russet and gray over most of the surfaces with a ring of blue around the rims. Lustre peeks through from beneath. The stars are sharp enough to just show their radial lines, and Liberty's curls show separation on all but the uppermost strands. Excellent surfaces and rims, and a desirable example of this variety. 1077 1831 O.101. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $850.00 Wonderfully vibrant lustre which remains especially bright, with a touch of purple and gold on the rim near Liberty's cap. The strike is average, with minor softness on the uppermost curls and minor hairlines limit the grade. A later die state with the reverse legend drawn to the rim, and the reverse die is rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise. The surfaces are clean for the grade and strike better than average. Shallow adjustment marks cross from the motto to the base of the second 'T' in STATES. 1079 1831 O.120 (R-6). Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $28,000.00 - with prooflike reflectivity on either side. Toned with dark blue and gray throughout, and quite attractive. This is an early die state, with the die swelling in the left obverse field scarcely present at the time this one was coined. Examination finds scattered handling marks, but none are distracting. For identification there are a couple of tiny ticks in a line on Liberty's chest, close to her neck....  more 1080 1832 O.101a. Large Letters. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 - with claims to Choice. Frosty lustre in the fields combines with desirable gold and blue toning around the edges. The strike is sharp for this later die state, with the unusual short, thick die crack extending from the wing into the upper pair of olive leaves, and an additional die crack has formed through the lower leaves to 'UN'. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $1,800.00 Splendid cartwheel lustre on both sides and toned with medium russet hues tucked into all the nooks and crannies of the design. Sharp on Liberty's curls and the eagle's claws, although a couple of stars lack their central radial lines. A solid coin for the grade, with strong appeal and minimal signs of handling. 1082 1833 O.108. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $6,500.00 A simply gorgeous coin that boasts iridescent toning which comes alive when examined under a light. The strike is sharp with no significant softness, and the surfaces are a delight to examine. The present coin has likely been off the market for two or more generations, and while not the finest of this variety, it is certainly worthy of any collection. Frosty lustre in the fields and surrounded by colorful iridescence. The stars show minor strike doubling on the left side. 1084 1834 O.106 (Rarity-8 as Proof). Large Date, Small Letters CH BR PF $20,000.00 Choice Brilliant Proof. Toned with dark gun metal gray over the fields, with the frosted devices showing traces of russet and yellow. Exceptionally sharp on Liberty, with her curls and profile raised higher than usually encountered, but most of the stars lack their center radials. The reverse is generally sharp too, with minor softness found on the rounded feather ends of the left wing near the shield. For identification...  more 1085 1834 O.109. Small Date, Small Letters. Brilliant Uncirculated BU $160.00 - but cleaned leaving some tarnish stains on the obverse that have disturbed the lustre. Satiny and white in color, the reverse more attractive and still a decent coin overall. 1086 1834 O.116. Small Date, Small Letters AU $220.00 A strong About Uncirculated with claims to a higher grade. There is a planchet flaw on the rim below Liberty's bust, which is also seen on the corresponding portion of the reverse which shows surface striations through the motto clear into the left wing of the eagle. Light silver with a few flecks of gold and green near the rims. 1087 1834 O.122 (Rarity-7+). Crushed Lettered Edge, Restrike VERY CH BR PF $72,500.00 Very Choice Brilliant Proof, and a virtual Gem. Likely the Finest Known for this rare Proof only variety. Toned with regal blue and rose on both sides, and well matched, with intensity seldom seen on any Bust Half Dollar of the period. The obverse is a touch lighter with rose-gold dominating the fields, while the edge and date show splashes of blue. The reverse fields and rims are bathed in intense orange-gold...  more 1088 1835 O.106. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $3,650.00 - nearly Gem. Attractively toned with frosty silver-gray over lustre, with iridescent pale blue peripheral accents. Dark gray on high points of the obverse and reverse, which helps to offset the design elements. Although a common variety, this is likely one of the best and almost certainly tied with a select group in the Condition Census for the variety. 1089 1835 O.110 (Rarity-8 as Proof). Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $30,000.00 Similar to the 1834 O.106 in Proof above, the present coin is likely unique in the Proof format. The fields are wholly reflective while the devices are well frosted. Toned with dark gunmetal gray which reflects back hints of blue and russet in the fields. The surfaces are very clean and attractive for this issue, with minimal hairlines in the fields, and a short series of five tiny pin pricks...  more 1090 1836 O.101. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $3,750.00 The surface quality is simply outstanding for this issue, although the lustre is slightly muted by the depth of the olive-gray and blue iridescent toning, particularly on the reverse. The central obverse is medium gray, but fades to darker gray through the stars and rim.
