Lot # Description Grade Hammer Price 2836 1800 B.15 (R-4) AB EF $2,100.00 About Extremely Fine. Lovely, problem-free surfaces and the reverse is fully Extremely Fine. Light silver with a blush of gold in the protected areas. A full strike on the reverse stars and eagle. One minor streak of porosity is noted along the lower left reverse. Broad dentils surround both the obverse and reverse, framing the devices. 2837 1801 B.1a (R-3) F to VF $1,200.00 Fine to Very Fine. Lightly cleaned long ago and generally bright silver with a frame of blue near the stars on legend. This intermediate die state has a die crack on the reverse through 'STA', several clouds and 'AM' of AMERICA. The rims and surfaces are otherwise free of distractions. 2838 1801 B.4 (R-4) EF $1,600.00 Extremely Fine. Lightly cleaned and still reflective and bright, with some gold returning to the rims. Examination finds light graffiti in both obverse fields and there is a small rim nick above the 'B' of LIBERTY. 2839 1802/1 B.4 (R-4) EF $5,000.00 Extremely Fine. This coin retains mint frost in the protected areas and remains bright silver with golden accents in the fields. The surfaces are free of nicks and problems although we note a minor shallow mark on Liberty's upper chest. The diagnostic die scratch extends from Star 13 into Liberty's bust. 2840 1802 B.5 (R-5). Wide Date VG $750.00 Very Good. Cleaned at one time and retoning with blue around the periphery. The surfaces have a few light scratches in the lower left obverse field and some minor rim nicks are present. Later die state with the obverse die crack through the base of the date and up the stars on the left, and this die state is elusive. 2841 1802 B.6. Close Date CH EF $4,000.00 Choice Extremely Fine. Well struck by the dies and with pleasing color and surfaces. Medium gray with traces of blue and gold near the rims. One tiny edge nick above the final 'A' of AMERICA hallmarks this coin. One of the most common die pairings in the Bust dollar series, and thus popular with type as well as variety collectors. 2842 1803 B.4 (R-3). Small 3 VF $2,100.00 Very Fine. A richly toned coin that has ample eye appeal. Examination will find a couple of minor surface scratches in the right obverse field, another in the reverse stars. Lilac gray with apricot highlights in the fields, and traces of lustre are present in the most protected areas. A more than acceptable coin for the grade. 2843 1803 B.5 (R-3). Small 3 F $900.00 Fine. Signs of an ancient light cleaning and toned with splashes of mottled gold. The obverse has two rim bumps on the left side. No other surface problems are found, and the reverse has started toning back with blue and gold at the periphery. 2844 1803 B.6. Large 3 VG $850.00 Detail of a very strong Good, nearly Very Good. The surfaces at first glance appear to be those of a smooth, gently cleaned, rather routine coin. Closer examination of the obverse, however, indicates that the denticles are not in their expected positions in relation to the stars and legends. Choice Brilliant Proof and exhibiting quite a bit of field reflectivity for a coin of this issue. The strike is quite sharp, including both the eagle's breast feathers and the shield of Liberty. Light silver gray with gold and blue toning near the rims. There are some edge nicks on both the obverse and reverse. Gently cleaned long ago and starting to recover with peripheral dark gold and blue. Minor surface nicks expected for the grade and a nice strike. First year of the regular issue. 2849 1840 EF $450.00 A strong Very Fine. Light gray toning due to a past cleaning. A few rim nicks are present; 1846 Extremely Fine but also cleaned leaving a series of light surface marks. A respectable strike. 2 pieces. 2850 1841 AU $400.00 About Uncirculated. Here is a well-struck example, whose surfaces have been treated to create the appearance of Mint State. This coin remains a generally appealing example of this long-neglected Silver Dollar series. 2851 1841 EF $460.00 Extremely Fine or better, but cleaned long ago leaving a bright surface. Well struck; 1842 Extremely Fine and also cleaned and now exhibiting a bright surface with some light gold about the rim. 2 pieces. 2852 1842 AU $325.00 A sharp About Uncirculated, nearly Mint State but lightly hairlined from a past cleaning. The rims and surfaces are clean, but there is some minor die rust evident in the lower obverse field. 2853 1843 EF $300.00 A very strong Extremely Fine. Ever so gently cleaned long ago, however the eye appeal is outstanding. Well struck and the surfaces and rims are clean and nearly problem-free. 2854 1843 AU $425.00 About Uncirculated. The surfaces are cleaned and there are some dull scratches in the lower left obverse; 1847 Extremely Fine, but previously cleaned leaving light gray surfaces which show some moderate marks. 2 pieces. 2855 1844 CH VF $425.00 Choice Very Fine. Cleaned long ago and nicely recovering. All business strike 1844 Seated dollars have quadruple shield stripes, a result of a slightly doubled die. On the reverse, there are several die file lines beneath the eagle's wings, and this date has earned the name the ''armpit'' variety. Average surfaces and generally gray in color, with a frame of rainbow peripheral hues. One of...  more 2856 1845 AU $450.00 About Uncirculated or thereabouts. Once cleaned and still reflective. Sharply struck and reasonably attractive for the grade with no surface or rim problems. One of only 24,000 pieces struck. 2857 1846 EF $270.00 Extremely Fine. An attractive coin that has deep gray in the fields, lighter silver on the devices. A small nick left of the date and another above the eagle's head are minimally distracting. 2858 1846'O' VF $250.00 Very Fine or thereabouts. Lightly cleaned and still a touch dull, but the rims are starting to recover. No surface problems other than some moderate contact marks. 2859 1847 EF $425.00 Extremely Fine. Cleaned long ago. Well struck with more than its fair share of contact marks present; 1859'O' Extremely Fine. Signs of ancient cleaning but overall a respectable example that does not show much in the way of contact marks. 2 pieces. 2860 1848 AU $600.00 Strong Extremely Fine and approaching an About Uncirculated grade, but cleaned. The surfaces show the expected hairlines, but no other nicks or bumps to distract. A scarce date with only 15,000 pieces originally struck. 2861 1849 AU $325.00 About Uncirculated. Signs of an old cleaning as moderate hairlines are present on the surfaces, and the coin is too bright. Starting to gather a hint of peripheral gold on the obverse and reverse. Sharply struck and with no rim or surface problems otherwise. 2862 1849 AU $600.00 Detail of About Uncirculated, but noticeably cleaned and exhibiting some noticeable contact marks present; 1872 Detail of About Uncirculated, but also noticeably cleaned. Both should recover somewhat if given a chance. Well struck. 2 pieces. 2863 1850 AU $1,200.00 Details of About Uncirculated, but cleaned long ago. The surfaces are bright and reflective, and show the usual hairlines caused during the cleaning. A scarce date that is always in strong demand, as a mere 7,500 were struck for circulation, and most of those were melted or lost during their first decade. 2864 1850'O' EF $1,000.00 Easily Extremely Fine or better. Cleaned at one time and bright silver with peripheral gold today. Sharply struck and still attractive, with no other surface problems. The 1850'O' Seated dollar has always been scarce and desirable. Apparently the original mintage of 40,000 pieces was widely melted and not many escaped. On the present coin, the reverse shows extensive evidence of die...  more 2865 1853 AU $600.00 About Uncirculated. Signs of an old cleaning and starting to tone back with dark gold around the rims. Sharply struck by the dies, and the surfaces show average handling marks for the grade. Clean rims lack the rim bumps so often found on these large silver coins.
