1801 JR-1 (R-4). Extremely Fine in sharpness but perhaps more conservatively described as Choice Very...1801 JR-1 (R-4). Extremely Fine in sharpness but perhaps more conservatively described as Choice Very Fine. Boldly detailed with a hint of obverse granularity, reverse is more generally granular. Well-formed rims frame an obverse showing abundant lustre, the reverse is forthrightly toned in clear red-gold. Mint State examples of this desirable date are virtually unknown and this coin was the finest available to distinguished numismatist Louis E. Eliasberg throughout his long career. For beauty and a most remarkable pedigree, this is a hard coin to match.

Ex Louis Eliasberg Collection (Bowers in Cooperation with Stack's (May 1996, lot 1048); previously ex Clapp Estate; Richard Winsor Collection (S.H. & H. Chapman, December 1895, lot 659).

Lot # 203
Hammer Price: $2,700.00
