Brilliant Uncirculated BU $12,000.00 - virtually Choice. Frosty silver underlies steel and rose-gold toning of notable delicacy. An exacting strike assures a wealth of finest detail for additional visual attraction. Early United States Dimes notes an MS-63 as the finest seen of this distinctive variety. By any reasonable projection, this exquisite coin must rank solidly in any Condition Census for this important variety. 202 1796 JR-2 (R-4). Date spaced 1 79 6 VG $2,200.00 Another. Very Good. The berry at the left base of the first 'S' identifies this distinctive reverse. Wear is appropriate to the grade, old scratches on the hair can be seen on the obverse. Holed and plugged at 12:00 on the reverse, details re-engraved. 203 1801 JR-1 (R-4) CH VF $2,700.00 Extremely Fine in sharpness but perhaps more conservatively described as Choice Very Fine. Boldly detailed with a hint of obverse granularity, reverse is more generally granular. Well-formed rims frame an obverse showing abundant lustre, the reverse is forthrightly toned in clear red-gold. Mint State examples of this desirable date are virtually unknown and this coin was the finest available...  more 204 1802 JR-2 (R-5) CH EF $4,500.00 Choice Extremely Fine. An extraordinarily sharp silver-gray and rose example showing a few trivial hairlines and an ancient toned-over scratch below 'Y' of LIBERTY. Early U.S. Dimes lists no Mint State examples of this scarce variety, the finest know being Extremely Fine-45, underscoring this coin's remarkable grade and interest to collectors of the early Dime coinage. 205 1805 JR-2. 4 Reverse Berries CH AU $2,700.00 Choice About Uncirculated and nearly Mint State. Well centered with delicate rose-pink and hints of iridescent blue toning coalescing along the sharply defined rims. Here is an exceptionally handsome example of this important date. PCGS AU55. 206 1805 JR-2. 4 Berries CH AU $2,700.00 Another. Choice About Uncirculated, on the cusp of full Mint State. Assertive lustre laves both sides, showing a hint of gold for added eye appeal. An unusually full strike extends to the details at the centers that are so often blurry on Draped Bust pieces. Diligent search with a glass finds a trivial mark or two but this is an ideal coin for any type or date-variety collection. A third example of this desirable date whose obverse boasts even graphite-gray toning with iridescent silver hugging the high rims. This reverse is deeper blue and ebony for splendid visual contrast. PCGS AU53. 208 1807 JR-1 CH AU $2,000.00 Choice About Uncirculated, close to Mint State. Silver centers contrast with areas of gray and tan-gold. Heavy die clash on either side adds dimension to the fields. Here is a very appealing example for any high quality type or variety collection. NGC AU55. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $4,400.00 - and boasting the eye appeal of a full Gem. Silver-gray centers are toned more deeply toward the peripheries, with champagne and amber tones beautifying the borders of this early Capped Bust Dime. Surfaces are generally clean and boast abundant, frosty mint lustre. Centers are well-defined, while dentillated borders are a trifle weak, as is normal for the variety. A bold die chip on the right side of the '8', at the juncture of the loops, gives this die state its distinctive nickname. Stark silver fields show appealing lustre, a glass finds a hairline or two from brief circulation. 213 1850 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $700.00 This thoroughly satisfying near-Gem boasts a needle-sharp strike and full detail, fields exhibit subtle flash, all confined within high, broad rims of unusual sharpness. 214 1851'O' Brilliant Uncirculated BU $1,900.00 - with the bold visual appeal of Choice. This coin displays a remarkable strike with precise New Orleans mintmark, all glowing through a wisp of clear gold toning for added visual quality. Few Branch Mint coins survive today of comparable eye appeal and overall quality. 215 1853 Arrows. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $700.00 - or finer. Vivid silver lustre underlies pleasing ruddy red-gold toning. A sharp strike created high wire-like rims on both sides, the reverse showing an as-made rim depression at 9:30. 216 1854 Arrows. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $520.00 Prooflike gleam underlies sea green, blue, rose and russet toning in various configurations on both obverse and reverse. Design motifs, legends, and date are all well struck and defined, the date itself being nearly joined to the rock upon which Miss Liberty sits. 217 1863 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $2,500.00 Here is a boldly gleaming example of this sought-after Civil War date, one of 14,000 business strikes produced. Lavish electric blue and deep rose toning distinguish the obverse, the cereal wreath reverse is more delicately toned for a delightful contrast. This dramatically beautiful coin shows many characteristics of a true Proof, but the obverse shows the last 'A' in AMERICA not filled...  more 218 1863'S' AU $550.00 About Uncirculated or virtually so. Here is a briefly circulated, lightly cleaned example of a particularly elusive San Francisco date. 219 1866 Gem Brilliant Proof GEM BR PF $1,200.00 Glittering fields bear rich blue-gray iridescent toning that highlights the deeply smoldering rose of the meticulous devices. All of the crisply struck reliefs stand forth boldly on this lavishly colorful example of 725 Proofs struck. NGC PF65. 220 1874'S' Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated VERY CH BU $2,900.00 Stark silver-white surfaces are accentuated by the boldest cartwheel reflectivity which gives exceptional visual impact to this lovely example of a notoriously elusive San Francisco date. NGC MS64. 221 1879 Very Choice Brilliant Proof VERY CH BR PF $500.00 Silver-white devices are highlighted by the underlying, faintly golden mirror fields. The resulting contrast makes this gleaming near-Gem a visual standout. PCGS PR64. 222 1885'S' Brilliant Uncirculated. One of 46,390 struck BU $2,750.00 - at San Francisco, and the rarest of all post-Civil War dates, elusive in any grade but virtually unobtainable in Mint State. This silver-white coin displays a wealth of fleck-gold toning for exceptional visual charm. 223 1886 Gem Brilliant Proof. One of 886 Proofs struck GEM BR PF $700.00 - in this late date, a smoothly gleaming silver-white coin subtly glowing with a faint hazy gold of exquisite delicacy and visual distinction. SEGS PR65. 224 1890 Closed 9. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated CH BU $200.00 Splendid full frosty lustre complements a boldly detailed strike on this late date example. Splendid coppery red toning halos prooflike silver centers for outstanding beauty. 226 1893'S' Gem Brilliant Uncirculated GEM BU $1,800.00 Subtly gleaming silver fields and devices are haloed in deep gold that circles the sharply defined rims. Here is a San Francisco date notably rare in Choice and above. 227 1894'O' CH EF $325.00 Choice Extremely Fine, and exhibiting abundant mint lustre for the grade. Champagne-silver fields exhibit a touch of deeper orange toning at the outer borders. Scarce so finely preserved. 228 1895 Brilliant Uncirculated BU $550.00 - or slightly finer. Blue-gray, gold and rose toning surrounds silver centers on this very well struck specimen of this Philadelphia mint scarcity. Some very minor album slide marks are noted at the obverse center. 229 1895'O' EF $1,200.00 Extremely Fine or better in strict terms of wear. Well struck, with only faint hints of weakness at the laurel leaves and the upper parts of the wreath. Silver gray centers are wholly surrounded deep russet-gold toning at the peripheries. Overall, the surfaces are decent and exhibit some very old hits and some areas of minor granularity at the obverse center.
