1795 O.109 (R-4). Two Leaves Below Wing. Extremely Fine and a strong representative of this high grade. Bright silver dominates the surfaces with a frame of speckled russet-gold coalescing around the edges and devices. Traces of lustre remain in the protected areas. There are some minor surface scratches in the right obverse field, but a glass is needed to find them. Clean rims and devices otherwise offer neither bumps nor adjustment marks to distract. On this die state, a faint die crack extends from the rim through the final star to Liberty's bust, and the reverse die is rotated approximately 80 degrees clockwise.
The reverse devices are deeply engraved into the die, with the wreath and eagle showing more depth and thickness than encountered on most other dies from this year. Remarkably, the primitive screw press was still able to bring up the devices fully, and in high grade the O-109 variety makes for an excellent type coin. The present coin is apparently the 8th finest compared to those listed in Steve Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars which is published twice a year.
