1916'D/D' Fivaz-Stanton 50¢-1916D-501. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, and a virtual Gem but for well concealed slide marks on the central reverse and a couple of tiny nicks above the motto. The strike is full and complete with strong definition on Liberty's thumb and most of the skirt lines. Starting to tone with rich coppery-golden hues, iridescent traces and a couple of specks of russet near the rims. The satiny lustre is quite beautiful on these early Walking Liberty's, particularly on the 1916-17 issues. The eagle too is quite sharp, and the Denver Mint was obviously trying to keep quality as high as possible on this new design. A magnifier will discern repunching on the 'D' Mintmark which was first engraved too low. A thoroughly satisfying example of this elusive issue.
