1854 Arrows. Very Choice Brilliant Proof. A generally bright and untoned coin that has minimal hairlines and no surface problems. Hints of lilac haze are found on the reverse, and some faint gold seems to be forming near the edge. Frosty white devices dominate the appearance, while the reflective mirror fields seem to fall away from the startled viewer. Minor planchet lines extend through the devices and fields, in particular up from the top of the shield through Liberty, and were caused when the planchet stock was drawn and rolled. The strike is soft on a few upper stars and Liberty's head, and on the left claws of the eagle. The date is placed high in the field, with the '54' nearly touching. Identifiable by a minor toning speck in the denticles below the 'D' of DOL. One of perhaps a dozen known.
Ex Bowers and Merena's Auction, August 1996, lot 136.
