1805. JR-1 (R-3). 5 Berries. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. The JR Reference Plate Coin. Obverse type: Liberty's draped bust facing right. LIBERTY above, 1805 below. Reverse type: Heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. 5 berries on the branch. An outstanding example of this issue and certainly among the finest known. The Lovejoy Collection coin. This variety must have been very popular at the time it was issued since there is a small handful of specimens known that are in outstanding condition, as this one. Clearly, a small and select few were saved from the time they were first struck. Almost a match for Eliasberg's. A really lovely example.
The obverse is lightly toned in pale gray in the center, while the peripheries are a little darker in color. The reverse is very attractive, with light silver and iridescent gold in the centers, the same colors a little deeper in shade around the peripheries, with the rim on this side a nice, deep silver gray color. The centers are fairly sharp, most of Liberty's hair strands are individually separated and most of the horizontal shield lines on the reverse can be seen. The center of the shield, the vertical lines therein, soft, as struck.
