1856 Snow 3. There is recutting to the left of the upright of the '5' in the date. The reverse wreath exhibits high inside leaves at the base of the 'C' and 'T' in CENT. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated with claims to a Gem distinction. Subtle satin semi-reflectivity in the fields complements sharp wreath and feather definition. A truly exceptional example of this die variety, as such pieces almost never offer the strike and lustre encountered on the coin offered here. With Mint State examples of this rare and important date being outnumbered 2:1 by Proofs, this lovely specimen is sure to attract considerable bidder interest.
Although Snow alludes to the possibility that Proofs may exist of this die variety, he indicates that ''if in fact there are a few struck as proofs, they are in such a small minority as to make them a statistical anomaly.''
