1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 49-f (R-5). Head Left. 154.9 gns. Choice Very Fine, or a bit better. Surfaces are microscopically porous, but they are worn quite smoothly and evenly, creating a hard and decidedly glossy result. Dark ebony brown with the awesome patina expected of an ancient bronze coin. About as well struck as could be expected of the variety in this die state; the obverse is rather severely sunken behind the horse's main in the right field, weakening the detail in that area. The whole planchet is convex as a result, subjecting the horse to more advanced wear than the protected reverse, which is weakly struck in the center as a result of the obverse die sinking! '17' in date is bold, only tops of the last two date digits visible in this later die state. Here is a very high quality, attractive specimen of perhaps the most actively sought after type in the whole New Jersey Copper series.
