1857 James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. Silver, 62.7mm. 1,550.7 grains. J.IP.35. Technically Very Fine. Medium silver gray in color on both sides with traces of blue iridescence around the rims. Both sides nicked, obverse scratched, rims heavily dented in places. Holed for suspension, without loop. Very rare, there have been very few auction sale appearances of this size Buchanan medal in the past decade. Only two sizes of the Buchanan medal were made from dies by Ellis and Wilson, and the smaller of the two is by far the rarer.
Ex David Dreyfuss Collection (Presidential Coin & Antique and Bowers & Merena, April 1986, lot 5173).
