$1.00. Fr.37. 1917. No.D100000000A. Unlisted in the current census. Extremely Fine or essentially so. This note exhibits vertical corner folds (two of which are quite deep), as well as a few smaller folds at the corners. The paper maintains a full measure of crispness for a banknote within this grade range. Although there is a single 100,000,000 note known of the Teehee-Burke signature combination (Fr.36), there were no known notes with this serial number from the Elliot-Burke signature combination until this auction sale. With the addition of the presently offered note plus the two lots that immediately follow, this population has grown to a paltry three pieces!
With there being a maximum of eight digits plus the serial number prefix and suffix available in the mechanized serial number printing process, these so-called 100,000,000 notes required that the serial number be hand set by the printer. Apparently, it was often more desirable to complete a serial number block with a round number such as 100,000,000 rather than the more awkward 99,999,999 from a BEP accounting standpoint.
