 1879 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated. Here is a richly prooflike example of a business strike mintage of only 3,000 pieces. Full lustre drenches both sides of this exciting Gem, whose reverse shows notable die clash. The scarcity of this classic late date has long been recognized, and the present coin is among the finest available today. Few of the limited business strike production appear to have entered actual circulation, and most examples known today are in Mint State. However, of 31 auction appearances listed in the Dannreuther-Garrett reference, only six were Gems and only a single piece was listed in higher grade.
