Glass Photographic Negative of the Matthew A. Stickney 1804 Dollar, 1907. Glass, 175 x 125mm. Nearly as made, a well-detailed diagnostic view of this famous coin, obtained by Stickney (1805-1894) from the United States Mint in 1843 in exchange for a Gold Immune Columbia piece struck over a British Guinea. Stickney was one of the leading American numismatists of the birth years of this study in the U.S. His collection was sold by Henry Chapman of Philadelphia on June 25, 1907, bringing the then-astounding total realization of $37,859.21. The 1804 Dollar alone realized $3,600, a phenomenal sum for the time, credited to 'Hercules,' the probable bidding incognito of Colonel James W. Ellsworth, in whose great collection it long resided. The 1804 Dollar in this plate is labeled 849, which is this coin's lot number in the Stickney sale. Chapman's files were dispersed by his secretary, so it is possible that this plate comes from that dispersal. PLUS Glass Photographic Negative of 1795, 1799 and 1804 Dollar Obverses, possibly also from the Stickney sale. Cracked severely in three places, with the upper left section missing. A crack bisects the 1804. Here are two precious links to one of the greatest American collections. 2 pieces.
