Pine Tree Shilling. The Cogwheel Pattern. Noe D, Crosby 10-P, Wuertzbach 46. Choice Extremely Fine. 74.6 gns. The Noe Plate Coin. Probably the Crosby II, 4 Plate Coin. Probably the Wuertzbach Plate Coin. Lovely, even coin silver gray with some pale blue iridescence. Extremely rare: the cataloguer knows of only two of these, the other being the Parmelee:336 coin. The Crosby illustration is not well detailed enough to be sure this is that coin but the likelihood is high. The Wuertzbach illustration is also a bit fuzzy, but if Wuertzbach trimmed his plate close at the lower left on the obverse this one was once his. He also knew of only two examples, his and one stolen from Julius Guttag 1934-5, making the chances that this is the Wuertzbach plate coin almost definite. The nickname ''Cogwheel Pattern'' was given to the variety by Joseph Mickley because the dots in the beaded circles were so large.
Probably ex Carl Wuertzbach; T. James Clarke, F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
