 1879 Gem Brilliant Proof. Cameo legends and devices float in scintillating satin-mirror fields. A delicate blush of golden toning completes either side. The Redbook lists a Proof mintage of 1,100 pieces for this date, however Breen states that the actual mintage was 750 coins from which 100 pieces were melted as unsold. The 450 coin discrepancy between Breen's net mintage and the usually cited 1,100 piece figure is the result of leftover coins being on hand from the prior year, according to Breen.
