1867 B.2. Gem Brilliant Proof, with rich Cameo contrast. A bright white coin save for the peripheries which show dark gold and cobalt blue through the dentils with a blush of color starting to form in the fields. The devices are frosty white and seem to float on the glassy mirror sea of the fields. The strike is virtually perfect, with no signs of weakness found. A coin which has been carefully preserved since the time of issue, as there are no surface problems and hairlines are faint at best. The frost on the highest points of Liberty remains undisturbed. For this die pairing, the obverse die has the point of shield midway between the tip and point of the '1', and the reverse die that was used to coin the 1866 Proofs with the short engraver's spine up from the third leaf. Breen believes this to be the most usually seen Proof variety from this year that saw a Proof mintage of perhaps 400 pieces. Certainly few remain that retain the quality of surfaces and rich eye appeal found on the present coin.
