1795 O.125 (R-4). Here is a coin with the lustre and eye appeal of a Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated coin. However, there are two minor dull but significant scratches which will identify this coin, one is hidden and extends along the base of Liberty's truncation, the other is short and extends horizontally in the small field below the left wing of the eagle. Bright and lustrous throughout, and ringed with deep blue at the edge, lighter gold through the stars and legends. Minor adjustment marks are found along the lower obverse rim. The strike is reasonably sharp on Liberty's curls, but lacks full definition on most of the stars and reverse legend. A very late die state for this pairing, with strong die clashing in evidence in the fields, and extensive die roughness on the obverse and reverse.
Well up in the Condition Census for the variety and may have claims to the Finest along with the coin we sold in our Cartwright 69th Anniversary Auction, the Garrett coin and one graded MS63 by NGC. The present coin has abundant visual appeal and lustre, and would be hard to best on any level. Diagnostics include last obverse star below and touching bust behind tip, reverse with nine by eight berries, three inside, none out on the right portion of the wreath below wing. A long horizontal die scratch extends through the top third of the right wing. An extraordinary coin that would grace any advanced collection.
