 1859 Choice Brilliant Proof. Reverse Hub Variety I. Delicate lilac-gray fields contrast quite nicely against whiter, razor-sharp cameo design elements. The quality is certainly superior to that typically encountered for examples of this elusive Proof issue. A total of 800 Proofs of are reported to have been struck.
Although Proofs were made of this date from both Reverse Hub Varieties I and II, it appears that the Variety I pieces such as that offered here are at least somewhat scarcer. Breen indicates that many of these same Proofs were melted as unsold, and at least initially did not list Proofs of this date and hub variety in his earlier writings on Proof coins.
