1849 N.18 (R-7). Proof-64. Red and Brown. This delicately faded red specimen exhibits iridescent hues of pale olive and brown in the fields. Close examination reveals only a handful of trivial carbon specks, one of which is located in the field at the tip of Liberty's bust. As expected, this glorious coin is fully struck throughout, with all of the stars showing their radial centers. The striking quality of these later Proofs shows evidence of the larger coining press, as the design elements are sharper and the rims squarer. Likewise, there is a lack of the rim beveling and star weakness often seen on earlier Proof Cents. The present coin is listed as number 6 in Breen's Proof Encyclopedia and is certainly one of the finer examples of this extremely rare Proof-only die pairing. Another opportunity for the specialist to obtain a very desirable Proof issue.
