1852 N.8, Early die state. Mint State-64. Brown. It is noted in the 1972 Merkin catalog that about half a dozen Proofs are known from the earliest state of this die pairing. Breen considered this a new die pairing (obverse N.8, reverse new, his 'B-23'), but subsequent research has shown the reverse die to be a very early die state of the N.8 die and thus not a new die variety (Grellman). The present coin is well struck, subtly reflective, and toned a light olive in color. The reverse is a bit more lively than the obverse, there being tinges of emerald intermingled with tan. Struck slightly off center, with a raised knife rim around the left side of the obverse and reverse. The surfaces are virtually perfect, with no troubling spots or nicks. Though this coin lacks mint color, the surface quality is far better than the norm. We therefore, at least in part, understand why this coin last appeared as a Proof, particularly since all known Proofs are from the same state of this die variety.
