1793 S.4 (High R-3). Periods Variety, AMERICA. Choice About Uncirculated-55 and a highly desirable example of this coveted issue. This coin is a regal chocolate brown throughout, with traces of lighter tan and ever so subtle original mint color within the chain links and reverse legends. The strike is wonderfully sharp, with Liberty's curls showing definition rarely encountered on examples of this type. A later die state with an obverse die crack from the rim to Liberty's lower curls, and another nearby crack extending near the tips of her lower curls toward the date. Identifiable by a very minor rim bump left of the date, and several tiny ticks along the edge above and to the left of the 'L' in LIBERTY. Matching tiny ticks are also noted on the reverse rim above and to the left of 'AM'. A short cut through the left side of the 'M' in AMERICA, and another pair of small marks below the 'T' of UNITED are also visible.
No surface porosity or similar problems of any kind are present, making this coin very desirable and attractive. The fields are smooth, hard, and marvelously wholesome. Listed as tied with three others as the ninth finest in the Noyes Condition Census. Considered only Extremely Fine-40 in the Noyes United States Large Cents 1793-1814 and reduced to a ridiculously conservative Very Fine-35 in the recent Noyes census revision published in 1999. Now that this coin has reappeared after a nearly fifty year absence, perhaps it will climb a bit higher in the next census as this example is truly a highly compelling coin. For any collector who demands quality and eye appeal, the present coin will certainly satisfy each!
Ex F.C.C. Boyd and Judge Thomas L. Gaskill Collections (New Netherlands, December 7, 1957, lot 887); said to be Ex William H. Sheldon in Noyes, and Mathewson in the New Netherlands catalog.
