1825 Br.1, C.1. (High R-3). Wide date, curl above 5. Mint State-60 in terms of wear. Cleaned long ago and now retoning an attractive tan over faded red. Slightly hazy, a result of long, undisturbed storage. Breen die state II. The present coin has the raised vertical lump near star twelve, apparently from a broken collar used during striking. Such flaws are rarely seen on any denomination. The presently offered variety is often found with this mint-made edge defect, and importantly, always in the same location on the coin. Breen did not believe that closed collars were used at that time in the Philadelphia Mint. However, this almost certainly points to a collar of some sort employed during the striking process.
