1870 A very strong About Uncirculated or better with respect to wear. Sharply struck and enjoying especially assertive feather definition on the eagle. Both the obverse and reverse, however, are hairlined and exhibit noticeable indications of a past cleaning. Toned a yellow-gold that is accented by the slightest hint of delicate rose. Despite its shortcomings, this coin remains quite rare. In fact, the total surviving population of this date is significantly smaller than that of the much more expensive 1870'CC' that immediately follows. One of only 4000 pieces minted.
Ex June Sale (Stack's, June 21, 1979, lot 166).
